Can I run two Focusrite 18i20s to achieve enough ports for a Atmos 7.1.4 set up? Each unit is 10 out. 7.1.4 is 12 requires 12. I keep hearing this ADAT word, I prefer not to get involved if possible in extra gear, just use these two units. I shall be running Genelec non smart speakers.

What generation 18i20 do you have ?
If you have generation 4 then it is easy to hook up.
You can connect them via Adat Lightpipe, not really extra gear.
For hookup options go the Focusrite website.

Either the audio interfaces allow to be seen as one device by Cubase, this is a question for Focusrite, or you connect them via ADAT. Too bad you don’t want to get involved with it. An ADAT cable is just an audio cable and it’s the same cable used for S/PDIF optical. It works with light rather than electrons. It’s really simple.
NB: another name for an ADAT cable is TOSlink.
It’s not down to Cubase. It depends on how the drivers work so it will show as one device or if you can connect one without usb via adat. If you are using a Mac you can use two interfaces as aggregate devices but latency may suffer.

It used to be. But hardly anybody still uses these devices. Left over is the name of the audio connectors.
Historically it was the company Tascam that used these connectors first, thus the name TOSlink, but ADAT was more popular.
