When installing Dorico, I see all the applications (HALion, Iconica, Olympus, Indian Drums, Groove Agent, Jazz Essentials) are for sound libraries. But I am interested in writing charts, not in playback.
Welcome to the forum.
I can’t see why you wouldn’t be able to use Dorico without playback? Have you tried it yet?
The one at the top. It’s already installed.
If you don’t add at least the Halion library, I think Dorico might object to not having a beep (never tested, so don’t really know). And the Default Playback Template in Preferences should be set to Silent.
can’t find the app to open it
Are you windows or macOS?
windows
Is it Program Files apps would usually be in?
Please bear in mind that it may not be possible to run the software without the sound libraries. They are listed as “recommended” which is the only reason I’m suggesting that it may be possible.
That is my question: is it possible to run the program without the sound libraries?
The app is not in Program Files. So maybe the app is married thoroughly to the sound libraries.
I understand. I was trying to reiterate that I only suggested that it could be possible and that it might not be so.
What comes up if you click the arrow next to Install again? Does it let you choose where to install it (i.e. where it is installed)?
On Windows the app normally installs into C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Dorico5 - so if you’re just looking for a “Dorico” folder under Program Files directly you wouldn’t find it. It is under “Steinberg”.
From the screenshot that shows “install again” I would guess it is already installed, but not sure why you wouldn’t see the icon.
Sometimes Windows 11 file indexing doesn’t kick in immediately after an install and you may not find a new program icon if you search for it right after. Try clicking “All apps” and scrolling down to “Steinberg Dorico 5” under the “S”. (This isn’t a Dorico specific problem, I’ve occasionally encountered this when installing any new software on Windows 11 and when I search for it, it doesn’t come up with anything, but if I go to the all apps list it is in fact there, and a few hours later the search works.)
DanielMuzMurray, I clicked Install again and now have opened the app, and although it chastised me for not having downloaded any sound libraries, I was able to open the app. Thanks for your help!
mducharme, after reinstalling it put a shortcut on the desktop. Good tip though, Steinberg, not Dorico.
OT: make sure that you put an @ symbol before the username if you want to specifically tag them, @bullfiddler
I have asked a similar question in the past.
If I just want to install NotePerformer and use that, I wouldn’t want to have to install a bunch of extra virtual isntruments and sound libraries.
Some people simply may not want to install the sound libraries at all. No different than composing with pen and paper, just less physically strenuous … and less calluses on your fingers from gripping pencils
I also didn’t install all of the “recommended” libraries, just Noteperformer. Although the installer throws a fit (“essential components are missing!”, followed by several screenfuls of scary file paths), I’ve never experienced any problems working in Dorico. (TBH I think Iconica is installed after all, but I don’t use it.)
It is perfectly possible to install only Dorico, and use only the notation part, like I did:
The only thing is that you do not have any sound

For my arrangments I have installed extra Sforzando as sfz-player and have only one sample for that purpose, saves a lot of Gb on the disk!
NotePerformer works great in Dorico.
It’ll play back from the middle of tied notes without problem, so you can start and stop your playback from anywhere.
You might know all this! Anyways, NotePerformer is fantastic in Dorico.
