Can importing multiple audio files PLEASE be on their OWN SEPARATE tracks?

When importing multiple audio files, why can’t Nuendo simply strictly import them as a separate bunch? If a current audio track on the timeline is selected, part of that import gets put onto that audio track and other audio tracks below it, which is really irritating and annoying. I always have to deselect everything, go to the bottom of the timeline, create an audio track there, then import the multiple batch, of which the first file will end up on that audio track unnamed. But the rest is okay. This is really goddamned irritating.

I just want to be able to “Import Audio Files”, and a fresh, SEPARATE batch appears. Even better, in a project with hundreds of tracks, I would like to select one track where I want the batch import to be right next to - it would be nice to have the SEPARATE batch get imported right next to that selected track. NOT** ONTO that selected track and other consecutive tracks.** Nor at the very bottom of the timeline, where I have to manually drag them upwards to where I need them to be.

This is has been a very annoying process and it’s still prevalent in Nuendo 15.

To make matters worse, for some weird reason, in the Preferences of the latest Nuendo 15, there’s now a “Import Files On One Track”, and it’s checked by default. Seriously??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I fall into a mouse trap and now I have to eat the mouse as well??

What happens, if you uncheck it?

“What happens, if you uncheck it?”

Then it’s back to the good old days of multiple import malfunction, where the newly imported tracks do not come in on their own separate bunch - but making themselves at home on any existing audio track in the project, before they run out and have to create new ones for the remainder of their friends.

What happens when you drag multiple audio tracks, from the pool into a projet?

That works, but I typically have projects with thousands of files in the pool already. Trying to avoid using this messy method if possible.

Steinberg, will need to make an Import script, that does not rely on an OS dialog.

Whatever works - as long as the imported batch have their own designated audio tracks, instead of leeching to current existing ones.

Hi

I’m on Cubase, but this should be so for Nuendo too… if I import by dragging a bunch of (fresh) audio files into my project and hover over the line between existing tracks in the Track List, a green line appears and I can drop them, thereby creating NEW SEPARATE tracks for each file. The files are inserted, beginning at the current Cursor position.

I am dragging from the right-hand panel mediabay (Media Tab→ Files browser).

This is regardless of whether another track elsewhere in the project is currently selected.

Dragging from the Pool, I don’t know about…

However, I’m guessing the ‘Import Files’ item from the File Menu mechanism is being used in this threads’ case. And the concerns remain.

So maybe the ‘Feature Request’ here should be to add a new button to the Options dialog that pops up (if you’ve set it to do so in Preferences), to also ‘Create new separate tracks’ or somesuch.?

I think the muscle memory for some will be too strong to ‘remove’ the behaviour altogether, of importing to an already selected track by default (or in the case of multiple files, starting with the selected track).

I have found that if you select a folder or a group track (instead of an audio track) and then import your files, each file will get its own track below the one you selected.

Drag and drop to empty space under the timeline will create new tracks. It does this since Nuendo 2 I believe. And I’m not aware that this has changed in the past.

Still not ideal. And most of the time they end up right at the very bottom of the project. Glitchy thing.

When using File>Import>Audio File…

You don’t have to create an audio track at the bottom of the track list. You can just select no tracks (shift + click on the currently selected track) and then import multiple audio files. They will be placed as new SEPARATE tracks at the bottom of the track list with each track named according to the file names.

It’s true that it can be awkward if these are placed at the bottom of the track list when you have a long track list. One possible solution is to use Divide Track List and import to the upper section (assuming you don’t have too many other audio tracks in the upper section). It’s then easier to find and select the new tracks in the upper section (using the ‘End’ key command) and drag them to the desired position in the lower section.

Unfortunately for your particular workflow request, the ‘ONTO’ part of that is precisely what other users might actually want. In other words, another user might specifically want to import single or multiple audio files starting at the currently selected audio track and according to the current position of the playback cursor - Nuendo has been designed rather with this way of working in mind. With the exception of the above procedure where no tracks are selected, the program expects the user to define where multiple files are to be imported before commencing the import, and without that information it will do its best to guess. If you must have them imported and immediately added to a specific position in the track list then you’d need to first add the required number of audio tracks and select them before doing the import, bearing in mind the track names would not match the file names in this case.

AFAICT all other drag and drop import functionality works as expected, as outlined by @Puma0382 above.

Thanks for taking the time for your detailed reply, I really appreciate this. It would be nice if we were given the option on Import though. Not everybody prefers to work the same way.

I think you’re right. An additional option as suggested by @Puma0382 above would help.

Thanks @stingray for reading… :slightly_smiling_face:

Also, the different workflow I outlined, is for right now. That’ll get the OP the outcome desired. Maybe not for all use-cases, but it should relieve a lot of the frustration, irritation, annoyance currently being suffered, via the ‘Import Files’ route…
