Can’t change tempo in Dorico

Cant change tempo in Dorico. Managed to change yesterday from the standard crotchet=120 to =100. Today it has reverted and nothing will budge it.

Welcome to the forum, @gpjohnstone !

The usual way to affect playback in Dorico is just to use a tempo marking in your score. You can add one with an explicit tempo:

Or you can add one that’s just a descriptive term, and then set the tempo in the lower Properties panel:

Alternatively, you can override the tempi in your score for playback by using fixed tempo mode from the transport toolbar.

It is kind of you respond so promptly to my post. I am new to Dorico - and it is driving me mad. (Moved from Finale). I can’t find what you call the ‘lower properties panel’. I’m using Dorico pro 5. I’ve clicked on ‘play’. Can’t see anything that looks like what you illustrate. Clicked on ‘tempo’ that doesn’t let me change anything - no slider to adjust speed. Clicking the up and down arrows on the metronome mark on the top of the ‘write’ page changes nothing either.
How I long for a simple guide that doesn’t keep throwing in Dorico terms for things - making something which is surely straightforward inexplicable. Probably like many I am a composer first and a software user a far behind second. But that is not Dorico’s approach.

Command 8 or the little arrow at bottom.

I strongly suggest working through the First Steps Guide, which will introduce you to Dorico concepts and the UI.

The Properties panel is at the bottom of the screen. You can access it by clicking the little arrow that’s in the bottom center of the window, or by pressing Ctrl+8 (Cmd+8 on Mac).

If you look at the help page I linked to in my previous post, you’ll see a couple of images there that might help you. To enable fixed tempo mode, you need to click on the blue quarter note in the transport toolbar:

So that it is no longer blue.

Then you can click on the numeric value, and a slider will appear so that you can adjust the playback tempo.
