Hello,
I am wondering if patches in a VST instrument can be change from midi or automation. If so how?
I don’t want to open several instances of a VST instrument simply to play two or three different patches.
Suggestions much appreciated.

Why does your computer struggle for power? I used to use program change on old hardware synths but have never used it on software synths. I always found it easier to use another instance. Which vst are you thinking of? Does it have the ability to store patches? If so you need to check the midi implementation or just try send a program change message and see if it responds.
It depends entirely on the plugin, if it allows any sort of automation (vst parameter automation or midi automation) for changing patches.
