Can you unmix discreet stems from a mono recording?

I would like very much to be able to create stereo mixes from mono recordings. Can SpectraLayers cleanly separate out enough elements from a mono recording to be able to achieve this? I have heard many amazing examples of this technique by different engineers on YouTube and elsewhere but none of them revealed what audio tools they were using. I was told by a couple of top engineers who use SpectraLayers that it should be able to do this but I want to know if anyone on this form has tried it and had success.

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

You can try it out yourself with the free trial.

Sound separation (“unmixing”) is one capability of SpectraLayers, so yes, it can separate elements of a mono recording, but whether it will cleanly separate them will will vary depending on the source material, the skill of the user, and what you define as “clean”.

Personally, of course we don’t reveal our tools for demixing mono beautifully. Some of us are highly paid for the skill and using lots of tools with lots of steps

Also, a mono 45 of “At the Zoo” is nothing like a mono 45 of “Radar Love” in pulling out all the mono components and keeping them artifact free….imo.

As to “click one button on sl” to make it happen for “your” favorite mono recording?

Doubt it.
