Cannot change instrument sound for playback

Hi,

I have the problem, I cannot change the sound for the instrument playback. When I change the instrument, it kills the playback, nothing can be heard. When I change the instrument back, it works. Somehow, only the sounds loaded by default will work.

I read everything I found, I looked tutorials, etc. but I cannot find, what I am doing wrong.

I made a small test piece, two cello bars.

The default uses the sound “Celli” and it works.

I tried several other sound, they all do not work:

I can open the instruments in the HAL mixer and press on the keys: they can be heard. However, when I play through dorico play it does not work.

I did check the routing, I did try several expression maps, I restarted the software… nothing works. As you see, I loaded four Cello-Versions in the Channels 1 to 4, but only channel 1 works.

I am completely at a loss, so any help would be very much appreciated.

Here is the test file:

test2.dorico (1.6 MB)

Thank you for your help,

Torsten

I’m not entirely sure what you are trying to achieve, but a few things stand out: You only have 1 channel in the mixer and each slot in Halion is routed to a separate output. In principle, you should only hear the output from Main but coincidentally enough, I can hear Out 4 through main (but not slot 2 or 3).

Do you actually want 4 separate instruments? If so, you should create 4 separate players in setup.

You are also using the Auto playback template, so any changes you make to Halion will get overridden when you reapply the playback template.

Thank you for your reply.

What I want to achieve: I want to use a different sound for the instrument than the default. And it doesn’t work. Any change can not be heard, only the default sound.

The file I uploaded is a test file. Of course, I can only hear one instrument with one input channel. I have 4 Instruments to try them out alternativly, but only default No 1 works. I also changed the Instrument in #1 Halion Player, but it doesn’t work. I also changed the output to MAIN on all 4 instruments: it doesn’t work.

It should be possible to change the sound of an instrument. But why doesn’t it work with me, what am I doing wrong?

I tried disabling the “auto playback” but again: it doesn’t work.

Has anybody any idea, what goes wrong?

Torsten

Well, it actually does work. Change all outs in Halion to Main and use the Iconica Sketch Vlns, Vlas, Celli for all MIDI channels (except slot 3, not sure which one is appropriate for that one) and you should hear them. Your mixer levels are also very low.

That’s because you only have 1 player. Create a player for each slot and things should work normally, each getting their own channel strip in the mixer.

E.g.,

Once you have 4 players, you can freely change the slots in Halion. You just need to use the appropriate expression map.

Thank you for your reply!

Well, it doesn’t work. I already assigned the Iconica expression map for all. But it does not work.

I know, that I can only hear 1 player. As I stated, this is a test setup. I meant, I can only hear the #1 channel instrument, all others stay dead.

As I explained above, if all Halion slots are not set to main and you only have 1 player, slots 2-4 go nowhere. There’s no destination channel strip in the mixer for the audio output. So you either need to set them all to output Main and fiddle with MIDI routing and expression maps with the one player, or, as in my screenshot, have 4 players, each with a slot, expression map and channel strip.

The Iconica Sketch expression maps will only work with Iconica Sketch instruments. If you substitute instruments from other sound libraries they will not work.

@Janus, thanks for your reply.

However, I tried several expression maps, none worked. Ionica was assigned by the auto template and, at least, it works with the default “celli”

That is because the playback template automatically loads a sound and its associated expression map.

If you want to use different sounds (non default) you will have to provide a suitable expression map.

Have you worked through the series of Tutorials on Playback? I think you would find them most helpful.

Is there some documentation, which instruments work with wich expression maps?

I understand that they should fit, but in real life it seems to be “try and error” and a very frustrating process, especially, if I cannot be sure the real problem is something else. F. E., for Halion I have lots of templates and expression maps, so I never can be sure which one will work!

No, but the names are self-explanatory eg. Iconica Sketch vlns, vlas, celli in the general format [sound library][instruments]. Similarly HSO Viola solo. works with Halion Symphony Orchestra’s solo viola instrument.

There are a few oddballs. The expression map called Default (which works for all pianos) just does one thing (controlling dynamics using velocity), whilst Velocity + CC11 and Velocity + Mod Wheel similarly just control dynamics differently.

Many of the sounds provided are not particularly useful in Dorico, but exist because these libraries are also used by DAWs.
