Cannot delete Project Default Chord Symbol Appearance

Hi all,

I have started experiencing very strange chord behavior from chords I edited in V5 that are now getting very wonky in V6. I have tried deleting (or rather “resetting to default”) these chords, but as soon as I “ok” in the editor and engraving options, they pop right back up. I cannot seem to get rid of them. Any advice?

Do you have any chord symbol appearances that are stored in your user library (with “Save as Default”)? If so that might explain why you can’t delete them. If so, it is possible to reset everything but it’s a bit awkward. You’ll first need to remove all the overrides in the score, by doing Reset to Default, then you’ll need to go through them again and “un-star” them.

Yes, these were all saved as default but they have gotten wonky since the transition to V6. I am working out of a template file so there are no chords written into the score currently but it still won’t let me delete.

As I say, if they’re saved as default you won’t be able to delete them - you have to “unstar” them instead. See Chord symbol continued Frustration - #26 by Richard_Lanyon

Hi Richard,

I think i followed the instructions (resetting them instead of deleting, “ok”-ing the dialogue box and then reopening), but when I do this the dialogue reappears exactly as I left it. Am I missing a step?

I’m not sure—can you try attaching a file here that exhibits the problem? I can take a look at that and see if there’s anything up with it.

I’m not sure why there’s some whack-a-mole behavior with the Cdim chord, but after resetting it twice they all seem to be gone for me.

You’re already seeing something different when you open the chord dialogue. There are for more options (several repetitive) when I open mine:

Ah, so anything that is different is saved in your userlibrary.xml file then and isn’t in the actual file itself.

Understood. So how would I go about resetting that?

Hmm, some of the internal IDs of these chord symbols are slightly unusual, but I’m not sure whether that’s related to the problem you’re seeing. Would it be possible to upload your userdefaults.xml file here? You should be able to find that in %appdata%\Steinberg\Dorico 6\ on Windows or ~/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 6/ on macOS.

Should this be hidden somehow? Both the folders for Dorico 5 and 6 are empty (though Dorico 2-4 have folders despite me never having downloaded them?)

I’m not sure what’s going on there - it definitely won’t be empty as your Preferences etc will be in there. If you do cmd-shift-G and type ~/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 6 in there (with the squiggle sign at the beginning) does that show you something different?

Actually, even easier - can you do Help > Create Diagnostic Report from within Dorico, and then post the zipfile here? I think that will actually end up including the user library file.

Attached diagnostics below. I did search for the folder out of curiosity and it is there and populated but no file with “userdefaults.xml” as a name. Is “userlibrary.xml” what you need?

Dorico Diagnostics.zip (1.4 MB)

Sorry, that’s my fault—I meant “userlibrary.xml” but then typed the wrong thing. Anyway, the file is in the diagnostics so I have it now. I’m currently on holiday so it may be a while before I get a chance to look at this properly. For the time being, would you like me to remove any of the chord symbol appearances from your userlibrary file manually? (I can do that in a text editor.)

In case you want to sort this out yourself, it is possible to do it, but it is an annoying three-stage process:

  1. open the chord symbols dialog and select a chord symbol appearance you want to get rid of
  2. press the Reset button, and OK the dialog to close it
  3. re-open the dialog, and re-select the chord symbol appearance again
  4. press the star button (which will now be filled rather than hollow), and OK the dialog to close it
  5. re-open the dialog, and re-select the chord symbol appearance again
  6. press the Reset button again, and OK the dialog to close it

I am slightly surprised by the fact that this takes three stages rather than two, so I will need to investigate, but will probably do that when I’m back at work after the holidays.

Hey Richard,

Hope you had a lovely holiday! Just got back to my rig and went through the steps - for the most part they worked but I have three stragglers that are tied to specific root notes:

Any advice on these?

Could you upload a new Dorico Diagnostics file for me, just so I can be sure what state things are in before I wade in with any misguided advice…
