Can't add insert effects? HELP

Right in the middle of my Cubase 10 project all of a sudden I can’t add insert effects anymore. The insert effects that were already in place are like grayed out and now I can’t open them. Any idea how this happened and how I can fix it without losing this project? Cubase 10 with latest update 2/20. Cubase for mac. Mac oS 10.14.6

At the bottom of the inserts section, there are two buttons. You have accidentally clicked on Routing. You need to click Inserts.
