I am using the latest version of VST Live 3.0.52.
I have some FX I would like to control the parameters of whilst playing back. When using these FX in STACKS I am able to use midi learn, but the VSTL learn and the plug-ins own learn function, to assign control to the parameters.
However if I try the same FX as inserts in the mixer, I can’t usually assign the MIDI input, but on the ones I can I often cannot get midi learn to work.
The FX used vary from Steinberg’s own (Studio EQ, Chorus) to 3rd Party (STL Amphub, Kilohearts Bitcrusher).
However I CAN get D16 Repeater to work as an insert.
So to clarify FX on a STACK work as expected in terms of midi learn, but not in insert FX.
My goal is to have FX controllable on an insert in the mixer for a LAYER channel.
Chorus and other Steinberg VSTs don’t have MIDI control, but they do have automation capabilities.
Create an automation track, select the FX in the Chorus mixer, and define the desired automation parameters.
Try it, everything should work out.
Here’s an example: an amp hub is inserted into the FX mixer and everything switches smoothly. This is version 2, though, I don’t know if everything should switch the same way in version 3.
Hi, thanks for the info. I have got this working, but I really would like MIDI control for real time FX mangling etc. As I said I have managed ot get some FX working this way, but find it odd that the Steinberg FX don’t offer than option, unless it is in a STACK.
Keep in mind that MIDI control is generally only available in VST2 format for most VST producers. Only a few offer it in VST3, such as Native Instruments.
Guitar Rig 7, for example, has MIDI control in VST3, as does TH-U, and Nembiri Audio, at least JP Pro.
Everything else (well, in this case, I’ve listed guitar VSTs: S-Gear, Amplitube, Neural DSP, STL AmpHub, and others) only support MIDI control in VST2.

I didn’t realise that. But it seems odd that I can get things working in STACKS, usually as a Quick Control assigned to the parameter I want. But I can’t get it working as an Insert. And Layers channels can’t be routed via a STACK as far as I can make out.
Take a different approach. The mixer has group channels that belong only to a part. You insert a FX into it, save it, and forget about it. The part changes, the FX changes, or it’s completely removed.
And automation hasn’t been abolished either. I understand wanting to make the most of the built-in VSTs, but what we have is what they say.
Well, I do it this way: the Amp Hub, its presets, can be learned directly in the host, like Cube or Vst Live.
We recreate the events on the MIDI track where we need to switch, assign them Program Change 1, etc. The Amp Hub can receive MIDI messages and remember them (it learns). I press “Learn,” hover the cursor over the MIDI event with the assigned Program Change 1 command. Press “Start,” and the cursor, passing over the MIDI event, will assign the PC 1 command to the Amp Hub. Here’s an example. Sorry, it’s in Cubase, but I’m too lazy to install Vst Live on my computer; it’s all the same.
And now the Amp Hub is full of effects, and good quality ones, including choruses, reverbs, and delays. You disable all the stomp, amp, and cabinet effects, install the one you need, create your preset, and assign it the desired PC number (0-127) in the same way.
Yes, but the amphub must be in VST2 format only. If you install VST3, VST Live may not let you select VST2 in the menu, so I always delete VST3.
Thanks for the tips, it’s a good system that is useful for some patch changes. However I am still keen to figure out how to manually adjust settings in real time, via a midi controller when an effect is on an INSERT. It works in STACKS but not on inserts in the mixer on Later or Audio channels.

I wouldn’t wait for them to give you the same MIDI control in the mixer as in the stack where you can learn, but I would take Guitar Rig 7, it has absolutely all the effects, and of excellent quality, I would make sets only from them, put them in the inserts in the mixer and control them via MIDI, dance with your controller online)
