Can't create correct number of rests on instrument switches for percussion

I’m putting together percussion parts for my percussion ensemble piece, and I noticed that there were rests missing when percussionists switch, thus leading them to have incorrect beat counts.

I found out poking around this forum that you need to put in rests into the part you’re switching to. Okay, but it seems with these toms I am unable to force duration for rests, it just won’t work. So I suppose one work around would be to make noteheads that look like rests, but that would screw up the score. Is there any solutions I’ve missed?

Can you post and excerpt of your score, perhaps just the c. 4 measures in your second example, as a Dorico file to see if we can work with them. We need to see exactly how you have set up your instruments to give real help.

For sure. Here you go! Thank you.

We need a Dorico file (just an excerpt) rather than an image.

Here it is! Thank you.

How is this…

What I did was to make the Toms measure before the switch into a pair of local 2/4 bars.

Here is the altered file excerpt. It’s in Dorico 6, but I expect you can still open it.

It’s not bad! Thank you for your help. This is crazy but I made it work by just pressing buttons but I’m not exactly sure how I did it? Do you have any insight here?

Here’s another version, where I defined a new notehead that looked like a rest and added it to Tom 2. But I like the appearance of yours better, so I may take a look to try to figure out what you did.

Strange, this is what your first file looks like when I open it.

The first one I posted or the second?

The first.
