Whenever I try to create an explicit rest, it does not show. I have tried several different ways but using the rest tool just results in the rest staying condensed no matter what I do.
I don’t know exactly what you mean by this. Can you explain a little bit more?
It should work, provided you’re in note input (the caret is activate), and have activated Force Duration and Rests in the left toolbox in Write mode, and then input something (e.g. press Y for the default input command).
This doesn’t work in layouts where multi-bar rests are allowed, and Dorico is therefore treating single empty bars as a single-bar multi-bar rest. You will need to split that bar rest by e.g. adding a chord symbol region to the bar.
I’m attempting to turn a half-note rest into two quarter note rests. I do not have multi-bar rests allowed, and I have been using the Rest tool with Force Duration on. I’m not sure what I’m missing, it seems like it should work and just doesn’t.
This works for me (Dorico 5 (latest), Mac OS 14.5):
Is that the same sequence you’ve tried?
Here’s what I am doing. Interestingly, it doesn’t let me select rest or force duration while in the mode that you are in (the select mode), only in note input. Latest Dorico, Win10
I don’t think there is any need to create explicit rests. Dorico will do it for you. Just put the caret where you need a note and enter it. (set up key commands for the grid length and positioning the caret becomes trivially simple)
I don’t want to enter notes, I want to turn a half rest into two quarter rests so that I can provide visual information above the rests. Much simpler to read than needing to detail which count I want the visual on in the text.
@ryanevangelho , it only works for me when I turn off Start Note Input (shift+N).
So interesting… I can’t click anything in the panel with Start Note Input disabled.
I can’t either when I select a whole rest, but can when it’s a half rest. Hmm…
Just to confirm, you cannot get this combination with a half rest selected?
I just tried it this way with a half rest and it was successful! Not sure why it doesn’t work with whole rests but at least thank goodness it worked in this case!
The reason the method in post #6 doesn’t work is that you’re trying to edit “nothing” – after the last note in the instrument, those bar rests aren’t “real”. When it’s a rest with any notes after it, you can force duration without the caret (as Judd did).
To make an explicit rest anyplace, activate the caret, type , and O, select a duration, and then Y. There are other options for each of those steps. See the User Guide.
That makes sense. I will say that the method you provide does not work in any case for me. See my video above where I attempt to use this method.
Rests on percussion kit staves are handled differently than normal instruments, because a percussion kit is a collection of several instruments. Explicit rests only appear for percussion kits when they’re using the single-line instruments presentation type.
You could use a slash voice to show the rhythm instead, or create a notehead set that uses the crotchet rest for a notehead?
