Can't input chords with MIDI keyboard

Hi everyone!

I see this problem was reported several times but I still can’t find how to solve it.
I have Dorico 5 Pro. I use Korg microKEY Air bluetooth MIDI keyboard and I am on Mac. Everything works fine but playing chords in is not working properly. It does not inputting chords vertically and instead it breaks them up horizontally. The only way to get it work properly is by pressing Shift-Q but even the tutorial video about chords input says if using a MIDI keyboard for input I should be able just play a chord without pressing Q and Dorico will recognize it.
Attached screenshot shows what I get what I play C major triad.
If somebody has figured out how to fix it out please let me know.

Thank you!

That just looks like you rolled the chord while in duration-first input. You have to hit all the notes simultaneously. If that’s a recurring problem, you might prefer pitch-first input. With pitch-first you can confirm all the notes of the chord were played simultaneously before hitting the duration to input it.

Welcome to the forum @egoruk !

Also, it’s just Q to start/stop chord input when the caret is active. Shift-Q is for the chord symbols popover.

Trust me, I tried it hard to hit all notes all the same time. In fact I tried to hit two lower notes of the chord first and then the third one and it still gives me first note as a single note

Yes, sorry, I mean hitting Q. But doing this it does not advance me to the next beat.
In the chord input tutorial video at 1:40’’ it says that when using the MIDI keyboard you just play the chords and Dorico will recognize it ( sorry, it won’t le me include the Youtube link here)

But it doesn’t work in my case…

You can advance using the space bar.

That said, my MIDI keyboard skills are atrocious, but chord entry works fine (without chord mode Q engaged). Perhaps there’s a latency problem between your keyboard and Dorico?

No latency. I think this is a bug. Someone else on this forum also had this problem. But he’s a Windows user and there was something to tick in his Windows Dorico interface.
And I still can’t enter chords by playing in unless I hit Q.
This said, is there a latency settings for MIDI devices somewhere in the Settings? I could’t find it.

First thing to check is whether the same problem occurs in other apps, like Logic, or Garageband, or Finale.
That will rule in or out Dorico itself as the cause.

I saw this option before and it did not do anything. Now I tried to increase the latency time and them set it back to zero and it seems seemed fixed the issue and I am able to enter chords not with my MIDI keyboard without hitting Q.

I’m still having problems inputting chords with the MIDI keyboard. Sometimes it works, but mostly it doesn’t unless I hit Q. However, that requires me to advance the caret manually for each next chord. I’ve tried different latency settings, even negative ones, but it makes no difference.

What else can I do to fix this?

Thank you.

Can you supply a Diagnostic Report (from the Help menu) after trying to play chords in Note Entry?

Do something like: select a half note, play several chords. (Using pitch after duration entry.)

I don’t think anyone else has reported a similar problem; but it’s curious that the MIDI is actually working in all instances, except basic Note Entry.

Do you have the option of connecting your keyboard to your computer using a wired connection rather than Bluetooth, to eliminate Bluetooth latency or unreliability from the equation?

Okay, connecting via the cable allowed me to input chords without hitting the “Q.” However, after I disconnected the cable, I now still can input chords without hitting the “Q” key.

I wonder if this is a temporary fix. As I mentioned initially, it worked via Bluetooth one out of ten times.

Thoughts?

Thank you!

It does sound like a Bluetooth latency problem. Dorico doesn’t currently provide a way for you to modify the “dead time” that it uses to determine whether notes should be considered as sounding together in a chord or represent successive notes. Perhaps for your specific keyboard this needs to be a little longer. If you’re able to work with the keyboard connected via a wired connection, you will find it more reliable.

Well, I have to inform you that inputting the chords is not working again, even with a wired connection. It’s very frustrating!

The same symptoms, even with a wired connection? The notes are not being recognised as a single chord, but instead are being input as a series of successive single notes?

You still haven’t said if this problem is unique to Dorico, or if it also occurs in other software – Garageband, Finale, etc.

It sounds like it’s more of a connection/hardware issue than a Dorico issue at the moment.

I don’t use GarageBand or Finale for the notation at all. Only Dorico

Can you test the HALion player standalone app? Quit Dorico, open the app, add an instrument, e.g. piano.

Can you play chords?

Do all the notes play together?
