Can't join rests

Hello everybody,

whatever I do I can’t find a way to turn the selected rests below into a quarter rest. I’ve tried with and without force duration. (I can force a quarter note of the same duration, but when I click on the rest button on the left, it does nothing.)

Any hint would be welcome!

Select the first rest, Press o for force duration then 6 for quarter note.

Well, I thought I had tried it a million times, but evidently I was wrong… now it works like a charm. Sorry for hassling with a simple question, and thanks for your very helpful answer.
