Can't launch audio engine

This evening I started getting a hangup when attempting to launch Dorico - can’t connect to the audio engine, etc. I’m completely unable to use Dorico.
Diagnostic linked below. Thanks.

Dan,

Please forgive me, if – as I suspect – you do already know this; but have you tried making sure that the audio engine from any previous session has been fully stopped?

Hi @dan_kreider , sorry to hear about your trouble.
So it looks like you haven’t used Dorico on that machine for a week or so and now suddenly it does not work any more. Actually, there are VSTAudioEngine log files, but they are completely empty, i.e. the audio engine does not even get to the point where it can initialize the logging system. So the audio engine somehow deadlocks, but does not crash, because there are no crash files.
What I also noticed, Dan, you are still on D6.0.22, but in the meantime 6.2.10 is out. But I doubt any different outcome with the new version, since it contains still the same audio engine version.

And I have another customer with the same or similar problem where we also did not get any further, yet. At least for the other customer D5 still works.

Dan, could you please confirm something? If you launch Dorico, it looks like the audio engine gets started as well, but deadlocks immediately, but therefore should still turn up in the Activity Monitor, correct? If that is the case, please take a spindump (click on the little, round icon with the 3 dots inside). Save the output to a plain text file and send me, please. Thanks

@Ulf attached. Still no luck, I tried updating Dorico but it won’t launch. :face_with_bags_under_eyes:

Spindump.zip (650.6 KB)

Thanks for the spindump, it shows that the audio engine is stuck in the media client, the code that tries to communicate with the MediaBayServer.

Could you please have a look at the Activity Monitor and tell if the SteinbergMediaBay service is running? If so, kill it it and restart Dorico. Is the SteinbergMediaBay process running then?

@Ulf, I returned to this device after a week. Inexplicably, Dorico is launching correctly now and all seems to be well.

I’ll carry on and return to this if it happens again. Sorry, no idea what changed or why it’s working now… thanks as always for your responsiveness.

Oddly, same thing happened to me 2-3 times today but after restarting my Mac it finally launched ok. Not sure if it has to do with a recent update to SoundSource, but I’ll continue to monitor it.

Hi @dan_kreider, hi @dtoub ,

then let’s keep an eye on it and if it happens again, get in touch with me.
Thanks
