I have a carline-attached horizontal line that I want to extend to the left. Since there’s a handle that I can click and highlight, I figured that would allow me to drag the line, and I confirmed that in the user manual, but it’s not working (doesn’t work on either end of the line). Using keyboard commands just moves the entire line.
Because I was having trouble extending the line to cover 8 bars, I first selected the 8 bars and then chose the line from the line panel. Does that somehow lock the line in on the previously selected bars? Shouldn’t dragging the handle still work?
There are two different ways you might want to move a line. If you want to change its real rhythmic position, then you need to be in Write Mode.
In that case, if you nudge it to the left with Alt(Opt)+Left Arrow while the left handle is selected, the whole line will indeed move. But you can then extend it to the right by using Shift+Alt+Right Arrow.
If you only want to move it graphically, then that’s in Engrave Mode. There you can select the left handle and use Alt+← (or the other combinations for bigger/smaller gaps).
Your video is exactly what I was trying to do—in write mode—and it wasn’t working. I can select the handle, but nothing moves when I try dragging with the mouse. I’ll try restarting Dorico and see if that fixes it.
That’s strange… Have you tried on a blank project?
I can see that the procedure is indeed mentioned in the manual, and I can’t think of an option (likely in the Preferences) that would prevent it from working. If you’d like to share a file here, someone might be able to help you.
I did just try in a blank project and it still doesn’t work. See attached file. It basically mirrors what I’ve done in the current project I’m working on. I tried without the text and still no go. The problem persists after quitting and restarting Dorico. I have not restarted the computer, but will try that now. Hopefully I won’t have to do what a recent New Yorker cartoon suggests: “Have you tried turning it off and leaving it off?”
Still, it’s not too long to do it with the arrows if you set the grid value to Whole (what I do here at the beginning by using my custom shortcut Ctrl+8)
Shift Alt arrow (either R or L) works to move the end point either right or left, but nothing moves the beginning point. Ctr Alt either arrow does nothing.
Yes that’s what I’m doing in the demo above. First Cmd/Ctrl+Alt+Left arrow to move everything to the left (if your grid resolution is set to Whole, each time you press the arrow, the line will move by one bar). Then Shift+Alt+Right arrow to extend the line to the right (also bar by bar.)
It’s not that long, as you can see on the video. And since it doesn’t seem to work with the mouse when there is no music at all in the staff, I believe that this is the (only) way to extend your line to the left.
