Cantus firmus (c.f.) in Dorico

Hi there,

Perhaps I’m not seeing the wood for the trees, but I want to add a “c.f.” (cantus firmus") direction to my sheet music. I have 4 voices, the “leading voice” is changing while the composition goes on. It seems that c.f. is not available as a standard direction. If I add standard system text (alt+shift+x) to the scores instead for the voice that is actually the cantus firmus, the text appears above all staves…

Certainly I’m doing something wrong - what is it?

Thanks and best regards, Ralf

Do you mean the text appears in all Layouts? Or, do you mean that you literally see it above each staff in the score?

Staff Text (Shift X) attached to the staff is what you want. System Text attaches to the system as a whole.

It shouldn’t appear on every staff, though: only on the top staff (plus/minus piano, other instrument groups, etc.)

Thank you both for your quick help - both responses are much appreciated!

@DanielMuzMurray : Yes, the c.f. appeared in all layouts, obviously because of the reason benwiggy explained in his post.

@benwiggy : This is the solution to my problem; many thanks for explaining the difference between both kinds of Text.

You live and learn - thanks to you both once more!

Best, Ralf
