CC64 Sustain Pedal Issue in Cubase 14

Hi all! I have a very strange issue with CC64 not being received at all in Cubase 14 PRO. Same setup (keyboard, interface, same session) works perfectly fine in Cubase 11. (System MacBook Pro M1 running Sonoma)

Keyboard is a Roland A-88. Issue is the same no matter if I use the internal USB-MIDI-interface of the Roland or the MIDI-input of the RME Babyface.

All is working fine, except CC64 sustain. Pressing the pedal does not show any effect in the MIDI monitor plugin. But you can see MIDI IN activity in the lower right corner, the moment I press the pedal. And depending on the plugin, functions are triggered, for example tremolo for Native Instruments stuff.

Any ideas? Thanks a lot!

Hi, @Marcel_Schechter

At first glance, I would check if there isn’t any filtering related to CC64 messages in the Preferences > MIDI > MIDI Filter panel (Controller ticked, CC64 in the controller filtered list…).

EDIT - But the fact that your pedal can trigger other CC depending functions makes me think that there is something wrong in your pedal settings in Cubase (any Input Transformer module active, in example ?).

Thanks, Cubic13, for the suggestions.

Under MIDI filter, only “SysEx” is checked.
And I started with a completely empty project, no input transformer is active. And as said, the moment I load the same project in my old Cubase 11, all is working. I don’t get it.

Greetings!

Hi and welcome to the forum,

Make sure, you have no any kind of Quick Controls or MIDI Remote Input set to All MIDI Inputs. Isn’t the MIDI Message filtered by Quick Controls or MIDI Remote by any chance? Do you use any Remote Deice?

Thanks, Martin!

It’s only the Roland A-88 that is connected as a MIDI device, and I’m using this port/device as the input port for the virtual instruments.

Greetings!

Hi,

Could you please attach a screenshot of the Studio > Studio Setup > MIDI Ports Setup window?

Sure, here you go … I guess German is not a problem …

Hi Martin! Because you asked me to attach this screenshot, I started to use the MIDI Monitor function from this window (not the MIDI plugin on the track). And - CC64 was displayed as it should be. I then created a MIDI track (instead of an instrument track) and assigned it to the Kontakt Player who was giving the strange results before. And sustain was working now. Keyscape shows the same problem when I run it with an instrument track. If I add a MIDI track to control Keyscape, it works right away. And what’s fascinating: after it worked with the MIDI track, I can also start using the original instrument track for controlling it. So - I’ll have to investigate a little more what’s going on here ;-).
Thanks a lot for your input!

NOW I found it.
CC64 was triggering Quick Controls.

Thanks again for making me think.

All the best, if you ever need some support for Genelec loudspeakers, let me know!
Marcel

How, and where did you find out?

Hi,

In the Studio Setup > Quick Controls, as I mentioned above.

Yes, I have read that. But I do not understand how he got that conclusion when looking at the screenshot. There are no Quick Controls mentioned. Or am I blind?

Ah, it’s not about the screenshot he posted. Understood now

This is the screen shot that is of interest
CC64 was triggering QC1 …
Greetings, and thanks again!

Hi,

Set All MIDI Inputs as the Quick Controls MIDI Input is not a good practice.

Thanks - I did not know that as a feature - to set QC to a CC number via such a dialog. So: thanks

Absolutely, Martin!
I cannot remember to have assigned it like this. Is this the default?

Greetings!

Hi,

No, by default, there is Not Connected. And the assigned MIDI CCs are 16-23.
