Hi,
Is there a way to make this beginning pedaling be a retake instead of a vertical line? The previous music has a “pedal harmonically” indication, so there are not lines notated though pedal is used. So I want this section to show that they’ve been using pedal before, but I’m just choosing to notate the pedaling at this point.
In my previous program, I just just choose the start of the pedal line to be a retake, but I don’t see a way to do that here.
Ideas?
You can make it a slant by setting the “Line start hook” property. But that appears to be the only integrated option at this time.
I ran into this problem recently.
To enter a pedal line you have to select a range of notes.
If you start the selection from the note before you want to enter the first retake, then you can select None for Line start hook in the properties panel, and then shorten the line before the first retake in engrave.
The only problem is that this doesn’t work at the beginning of a system. The only solution I could find was to start the pedal line in the previous system.
Edit: I’ve revisited this to try another idea (unsuccessfully) and I realized that I totally misremembered what I did. The post is corrected now.
I guess that’s because there is no rhythmic position before the start of a system?
Yes, I think so.
I played around with moving the start of the pedal line in engrave, but the line still starts with a hook.
I guess it would be possible to start the pedal line after the last notes in the previous system, but that leaves a line that can’t be hidden independently of the rest of the pedal line.
In the end I decided that adding a retake in the previous system was the least ambiguous option.
Okay, it’s sad that there’s not a way to do that without a workaround. But thanks for giving me something to try!!
I tried a few more things, and realized that most of what I wrote in my first post was incorrect. It’s correct now.

Okay thanks. I figured it out based on your picture, but of course luck would have it that the measure with the retake really needs to be at the start of a system, so I did have the issue you mentioned that was “unfixable.” The problem was that there was no retake in the previous measure!
So I said, “no hook” and then in Engrave, set the line to be 1% scale. That still left a small little line, so I moved it up to be super close to the staff. If you look closely, you still see the tiny line, but most people won’t notice it.
Inspired by @DWR-keys’s method, you can create a bar with a small extra duration at the beginning, enter the pedal on the rest, the retake on the first note right after it, and then remove the rest. That way, the ped. line really starts on the retake.
