Change Instrument refuses to change

I exported a Finale big band score file via XML and imported it into Dorico.

Of course, I get bit by the saxophone treble/bass clef issue.

My issue is, when I try to change the instrument type for Tenor or Bari Sax to it refuses to change the instrument type. I’ve saved, re-opened, everything I can think of, but it refuses to change instrument types.

Is there a way to make the Bass Clef Concert Pitch version the default? Especially on imported XML files?

Recap: two issues…1. Tenor and Bari Saxes refuse to change to Bass Clef concert pitch instruments and 2. Is there a way to make that one the default.

Thanks!

Ralph

You can go into Library > Instruments and edit the definition of the Baritone Saxophone (Default) instrument so that it works the way you want it to, and then click the Save as Default star.

Can you upload a small project that demonstrates the issue you’re describing about not being able to change instruments?

I tried changing it in Instruments…and, as best as I can tell, it is already changed.

Here is file…

Also, look at the vocal part…How can I get the repeat endings to not collide with the rehearsal marks. It is messing up the alignment of the staves.

Thanks!!

Hi @ralphw, did you try to Delete the initial clefs? I see many local clefs in your score, probably due to the imported XML: if you select a clef, and only that one becomes orange (selected), means that it is a local clef. Being this an override, the clef will not change if you change the instrument.

You can apply the Delete the initial clefs command using the Jump bar: press J and search for Delete initial clefs.

Or you can assign a shortcut, or a Jump bar alias or a MIDI command to this Key Command in Preferences>Key commands.

Using this command will clear up all the local initial clefs, so that they follow again the setting of the Instrument definition (which you can further customise in menu Library>Instruments, if needed).

Edit: if for some reason you want to delete only one (ore some) of the local clefs, maintaining the other overridden ones, you can just select it and press delete, and the overridden clef will be substituted with the “original” one.

Edit 2

I keep forgetting about “Delete Initial Clefs!!!”

Thanks.

Now what about the repeat endings??
