Change metric units to english?

Is there a way to change the units from metric (mm) to English (inches)? I am coming from Finale which has a side ruler in inches. Trying to set up songs to match (ie placement of title, author/composer, first stave of song, copyright information line, etc.) - really wishing Dorico had a side ruler as well, but trying to work with the Frame information box at the bottom of the screen.

Dorico should do this for you automatically, if you use Flows, and either set the “First” page template for each new flow in Layout Options; or just use Flow Headings. There’s literally zero work.

Typing “units” in the search bar of the Help pages gives this:

Sorry, couldn’t resist.
BTW, there are plenty of English speakers who use metric (mm) and not inches.

Yes, but Fahrenheit is clearly the superior temperature scale.

I was typing in words in the search like “rulers”, “metric to English”…but of course a simpler “units” was the better way to search for this topic!

The English speakers in England typically use millimetres for these sorts of things (though we do still use pints, albeit larger pints than US pints, for milk and beer, and we have road signs warning of something 200 or 400 yards ahead that are actually placed 200 or 400 metres apart).

“Imperial” is probably a more reliable search term than “English”, even if it’s arguably more offensive to more people…

You could at least wait until the stock market stops tanking…

You’re right. Sorry. If it’s any consolation (and I’m sure it’s not), our markets and investments are a mess too.

No worries – without getting into the politics of it all (please!), it’s clear that there are large-scale short-term global impacts. We’ll see what the future holds.

Your gallons are the wrong size too!

“pints of petrol”
“gallons of gas”

Both seem to pass the alliteration test.

(“liters of liquid methane”?)

Wrong units altogether. It’s cubic feet of gas.

But…

alliteration!

We did too! Here, it was designating a 50/50 mix of beer and Coca Cola! My entire teenage years ran on that stuff…

Leaving the metric vs imperial argument aside, inches are the basis of typographic units – points and picas etc. – and sometimes it can be vexing to work between metric paper sizes and typographic proportion. Rulers & grids certainly help, esp. when you can switch easily between them.

… which is why I work exclusively in points. Line widths that are 0.5 pt, 1pt, 2pt are easily understood, rather than things like 0.00694"; and margins of 45pt, 54pt, 64pt are also understandable as fractions of an inch (72pt).

Once you get comfortable with A4 as 595 x 842, then 300pt is about half the width and 400pt is about half the height.
