I’m having trouble trying to figure out how to change the bars per system on page one only. I have two flows. Flow one for page one and flow two for page two. I’d like page one to have two bars per system. Page two is good with three bars per system. I just need page one to have two bars per system so I can have four systems on that page. Any advice on how I can do that on a MacOS?
As you’ve probably discovered, you can’t use layout options for this.
The simplest way is to add system breaks to page 1.
Alternatively, you could try adjusting the note spacing rules in layout options, or by adding note spacing changes at the start snd end of page 1.
Have you hidden System Breaks?
I would be very surprised if that first system isn’t already locked, because it’s clearly overfilled, and Dorico doesn’t do that by itself.
But yes: I’d suggest using a Note Spacing Change at the very start, with a larger value than at present; then put another Note Spacing Change at the start of page 2 to reset the value in Layout Options.
Note Spacing Changes are under the Engrave menu, and are added at the current selection.
But make sure there aren’t any system breaks there already.
Here is the process of how I got to this point. As I was working on the first instrument (the one with all the words), Dorico pushed the first instrument to page two. After completing all of the music for instrument one, I selected the first note in the first system, then went to the very last note and used the apple key + click to select the last note of this instrument. I then went to Engrave mode to make that into a single frame (Frame Break), at which point it had four systems of two bars a piece. I then created a page two with a new flow and entered the second instrument with all of its music, and needed to create another frame break to have all the music for that instrument on page two. At this point, everything looked like what you see in the picture below. Then I went to the layout options to remove the instrument labels which resulted in what you saw on page one in my previous post. I don’t want the instrument label’s (staff labels) there, but I want the layout of the music to stay the way you see it in this picture. Then in layout options, I went to the casting off menu to try and adjust the bars per system option for the individual flows, and that wasn’t working. When I adjusted the bars per system for the full score just to see what it would do, and it only adjusted the flow on page two. Hopefully, that provided some perspective on how I got to the picture in the last post of mine. For your convince, I posted the end result below the first photo.
Fixed casting off settings in Layout Options affect all flows in the layout.
I’d recommend setting the layout to 3 bars per system, then use system breaks or moving bars commands to fix up page 1.
