Hi, I’m messing around with the samples from spitfires “BBC Symphony Orchestra”. There are - dependant of the package - lots of “techniques” sampled. E.g. in my middle package (core edition) there are 44 instruments sampled, but with 344 techniques.
So I think it should be possible, to change say in a staff with violine melody to change a few notes, just by adding (e.g.) “pizz.” to the note. Then should the melody instead of the normal “bow-sound” change to a pizzicato instrument by automatically switching the technique - and back afterwards.
But until now I don’t succeed.
Is it possible at all? If so, how? With a clever designed expression map? With an additional player? A completly other way?
I think, that is an interesting question to all sorts of VST / AU-instruments.
The clever designed expression map is the answer. And you’re lucky: John Barron, from Steinberg has made one (and has even recently updated it!), you’ll find it the Dorico resources page.
Make sure it’s installed. Then use the playback template, it will ensure that each and every instrument loaded with that library (BBCSO core) will get the correct expression map so that you can use each and every articulation available in the library. (And make sure to only use those articulations…)
ALL VSTs require an expression map that will translate a mark on the score (a playing technique) into a suitable instruction to be sent to the VST.
Dorico only provides expression maps for the sound libraries that are bundled with Dorico. If you use other sound libraries, you will need to create the expression maps for yourself, or find ones created by others.
