Changing Horn Key Signatures

I created some scores with key signatures for the horns. After consulting with some players, I woud like to change the horn parts to no key signatures (but, of course, retaining all the accidentals). To be clear, the other parts in the score should keep their original key signatures.

Is there a way to do this without creating four new horn parts and deleting the original ones?

Thanks.

Change the instrument so that you’re using the horn that’s defined with no key sig.

@asherber gives you the answer, but I ask (seriously) what prevented you from experimenting to find that answer for yourself?

It may not have occurred to him that there were “instruments” already set up to do that.

BTW, the other option is to edit the instrument definition for the horn you’re already using and just uncheck “Uses key signatures”. That’s how the “F No key sig” horn is set up by default.

The simpler approach is just to change the instrument for that player in Setup and see how that changes things.

It is not complicated. It is non-destructive. And is usually educational.

Yes. My patience is sometimes limited.

@asherber , Much appreciated!

@asherber ,
I am running into an issue.

  • Four horn parts with key signature that I want to change to Horn in F with no key signature.
  • I tried changing horn 1, then horn 2, then horn 3, and then horn 4. I also tried changing them in reverse order: 4, 3, 2, 1.
  • The parts get scrambled: the parts don’t match the labels anymore.

In this example, I changed them in order 1, 2, 3, 4. Horn 2 and 4 are still playing the right notes, but horns 1 and 3 are reversed.

I understand that I can change the score order, but that that won’t fix the problem that the parts aren’t assigned correctly.

Ideas?

There are a couple of things you could do. In Setup mode, you can drag the players around until the musical material is in the correct order, regardless of the player/instrument number, and then do Setup > Renumber Instruments.

Or, instead of changing the instrument held by each player, you can click on the 3-dot menu next to one of the instruments and choose Edit Instrument Definition. In the window that opens, scroll down to the Transposition section and untick “Uses key signature”. All 4 horns are using the same instrument definition, so changing the definition will change the display properties for all 4 at once, without changing their order.

I would make sure the chosen score order in Setup is set to NONE (That should prevent Dorico from reordering and renumbering). Then just change each Horn instrument to no sig.
(I’ve not tried it, but that’s what I would do)

Thanks @Janus and @asherber.
