I’m struggling to understand how a Cubase project (*.cpr) file is associated to a defined project folder, and how it’s possible to change the path of a project folder for a specific *.cpr file, later.
Example: I set a wrong project folder for a specific Cubase project file. Now, every time I add a new audio to the project file it puts the audio in the Audio folder of the wrongly defined project folder.
I know I can do Backup Project to consolidate everything to a new directory, but what if I want to define the current directory (where my *.cpr file resides) as a new project folder, without moving it somewhere else?
In other words, I want to correct my mistake of defining a wrong project folder path and change it to a new, desired path.
To cleanly move an existing Cubase project file (*.cpr) to a specific project folder—or to re-link it—the best approach is to use the “Back up Project” function. This copies the project file, along with all associated audio media, to the new destination folder.
Steps for linking and securing
Open the relevant project in Cubase.
Go to File in the top menu.
Select Create project backup…
Create and select the new, desired project folder.
Confirm by clicking OK; Cubase will then copy all media files to the new folder without errors and link the .cpr file to that location.
It depends on dependencies (that sounds cryptic doesn’t it! ). If it’s just a .cpr with no audio create a new folder with the name you want, put an Audio folder in there and open the .cpr from there. If there’s audio you have to copy the original audio folder instead of creating a new one. I f you linked to outside references use Backup Project.
I keep everything in the same project folder so I can move the folder anywhere I want, rename the folder, etc. If you use outside references instead of copying to the project folder you should aways use Backup Project.
So, a *.cpr file always looks for the external audio (if external audio is used in that file) inside the Audio folder, where that *.cpr file is located, I assume?
Right now I have many small cpr files. Each cpr file has a specific name. Each cpr file is in their own folder which has the same name as the corresponding cpr file.
Each cpr file has no external audio, yet (just midi), but that might change later.
Some cpr files - and the folders they belong to - might be renamed later.
And this is the part where I am not 100% sure, what can happen down the road, especially in regard to renaming the cpr files and their folders.
By “everything” you mean all the assets for one cpr file? Or several cpr files?
Not sure I understand this. But I do understand that if my cpr file works, but the assets like audio, which are connected to it, are scattered all over the place, the Backup feature exists to consolidate everything together into one folder to a specified new location.
This is not correct.
The path to the project folder (which includes the audio subfolder) is written into the .cpr file. It is written as an absolute path, meaning you can move a .cpr file around on the computer and it will still know where its project folder is.
All you have to do is - wherever the song titled project folder is located on your pc that contains the sub folders which includes the audio folder and other folders attached to the project and the CPR file. Copy the whole project folder including everything and paste to your choice location ,then open Cubase go to menu/file/open - go to the destination where you pasted the project folder ,open the folder then click on CPR file it will open the project from the new location and Cubase will from now on associate that project from that location,you can now go and delete the original .
So, the moment I open the cpr file from a new location, that new location will be added / updated in the cpr file as the new project location? I mean, just the opening of the file is enough or do I actually have to save the file again?
Don’t delete the original untill you know everything is in good order and nothing is missing and you’re happy with the new location,then delete the original if you want but by that time you will probably forgot about it lol
Also if when your project folder is in your new location if you want to re-name the project folder you will then have to repeat the opening of the CPR file via menu/file/open then it’s good to go .
Another thing maybe worth mentioning. Right now I am working with a lot of different melodies played with different instruments.
I am trying to create a system where I add “tags” to the folder containing each melody, so to speak, to label them after different genres and moods.
For instance, if I had “Progressive1” and “Progressive2” folders initially, I might rename them to “Progressive1_Happy” and “Progressive2_Sad”, and so on.
But I am not renaming the cpr files inside those folders. So I’m wondering if me constantly renaming the folders could create some problems later down the road. Especially if I start adding custom audio files, track pictures, etc.
Just save each version of Melody with a different name , after the song title add 1,2,3,etc, each CPR file will be saved ,some songs I do can have lots of cpr files belonging to that one project.
You do a version of your song ,when you are happy go to menu file/save as ,then you will be promoted to re name the CPR file you then type for example “song name 1” and press save ,at this point I would then if I was going to change the song again by importing another file maybe record something else I would go to menu file/ save as and name it “song name 2” press save etc etc you can do this as many times as you want,when you re open Cubase you will see all the different versions on the opening “recent projects” splash screen thing. You choose which one ,plus all the various versions of the CPR will be saved in your main project folder.phew! Lol
