Why is this present but disabled? I can’t guess what I’m missing…
I know I can export audio in the traditional way but I wish I could understand…
Thanks.

Hi,
what’s a channel type selector? Can you give me a hint, please?
Hi @Reco29 , I mean the rightmost “double circle” on both the tracks in the screenshot; channel type is how Cubase manual refers to it (one circle for mono, two for stereo channels). You should be able to change it in the project window and in the mixer as well…
Ah, thank you! I’m afraid it’s called the channel configuration. The channel type would typically refer to audio, MIDI, FX etc instead.
No, it’s not possible to change the channel configuration of an instrument track.
Imagine an instrument track as an information pipeline. At the front end, there’s a simple MIDI channel. It is connected to a specific sound generator (your VST instrument) which is routed to an output bus. The front end can not differentiate between different channel configurations - it just feeds the next level (the sound generator) with whatever MIDI information you provide. It’s only at the back end stage that you can change the channel configuration via your output routing. Here, you can route the signal to a mono bus if this is desired.
I hope that this makes sense.
You’re right, I wrote that in the wrong way…
Yes, I would say (if I understand correctly) absolutely. But then I ask myself why putting a channel configuration selector on an instrument track if you can’t use it… ![]()
They want to confuse us… ![]()
Good question, I don’t know TBH!
Maybe…
But I’m able to confuse my self even without Steinberg help… ![]()

It acts as a display only. An information for you.
The configuration is determined by the instrument plugin.
Thank you @Johnny_Moneto ![]()
Hi @Johnny_Moneto ,
can you give an example, please? Which VST instrument is set up as a mono configuration at the front end to stick with that imagery?
Honestly, I don’t know. I think Kontakt allows you to create mono return channels but I don’t know if the first channel can be mono.
Yes, it’s possible to activate mono return channels in Battery, too. Anyways, I still can’t think of any VST instrument instance that can be opened as a mono instrument and which would be displayed as such in the track header.
It’s indeed redundant because it can’t be changed and it doesn’t provide any useful information. I guess that’s the reason why none of the factory presets in the track control dialog window include the channel configuration icon for instrument tracks.
@arfo62 If I were you I would simply exclude the channel configuration icon from your preset. My guess is that Streinberg just left the icon in the dialog window because it doesn’t do any harm.
Keep in mind that you need to set up separate presets for each track type.
This is possible, even if a bit weird to me…

Thank you @Reco29 ,
I created a personal basic preset recently and I excluded channel configuration selector from Instrument tracks, actually; the reason for I was trying to use it is to render a VST bass sound in mono rather than stereo using render in place function instead of ‘tradititional’ audio mixdown export way as I finally did… Next time I’ll avoid to try ![]()
