Choose file in Nuendo Hub freezes Nuendo 15

Hey everyone,

We’ve run into a frustrating bug since upgrading to Nuendo 15.0.21 on Windows 11 Pro (25H2). It seems like whenever Nuendo tries to call a native Windows File Explorer dialog, the app randomly freezes.

Where it happens:

  • Nuendo Hub: Clicking “Choose File” frequently hangs the app (interestingly, opening from the “Recent” list works 100% of the time).

  • Audio Export: Clicking to change the file path/destination folder causes the same freeze.

Context:

  • This never happened in Nuendo 14 (and still doesn’t on the same machines).

  • We can easily reproduce this across several different systems in our studio.

  • We’ve tried trashing preferences, but that didn’t help.

  • We chose the option to return to the Nuendo Hub when closing a project. If we choose to quit Nuendo after closing a project, the problem does not appear.

  • Nuendo 15.0.20 showed the same bug.

It really feels like a broken handoff between Nuendo 15 and the Windows OS file API. Anyone else running into this, or have any clues/workarounds?

I’m having a similar problem with Nuendo 15.30:

Various operations that are supposed to open a Windows Explorer window for navigation cause Nuendo to freeze.

Examples:

- When exporting a cue sheet (freeze when the Explorer window opens)

- Archiving a project (freeze when the Explorer window opens)

Export to default locations ( where is no need of Explorer Window for Navigation) do work as usual.

The problem only occurs with some projects, not all of them.

Perhaps the problem is related to the preferences and presets that are carried over from previous versions of Nuendo (possibly since Nuendo 12).

Maybe a related issue:

Multiple selection using the Shift key is no longer possible.

I’m at a loss and will perform a clean install of Nuendo 15.30 and reconfigure all presets

We’ve been able to narrow down the bug:

  • Older Projects are Unaffected: The bug does not appear when opening templates or projects created in older legacy versions of Nuendo (such as Nuendo 10).

  • Blank Projects are Unaffected: Initializing a completely blank project natively in Nuendo 15 does not trigger the crash.

  • The Root Cause: The freeze is strictly tied to our active production templates. We are currently using Nuendo 14 templates that were originally migrated from Nuendo 13. We aren’t entirely sure at which stage of the version migrations the template data structure became “corrupted” or incompatible with Nuendo 15’s Hub handler.

It’s therefore quite possible that something unique in our environment has found its way into the template (or during one of the project migrations) and is contributing to the issue.

We’ve recreated our templates in Nuendo 15 by Importing Tracks of our ‘corrupt’ templates. When working with new projects based on these templates the bug does not occur. Hope this helps for you too.

We’ve shared our finding with Steinberg support, but they didn’t receive any other similar reports from other users. Perhaps sharing your ‘corrupt’ projects with SB will help them fix this issue.
