Choosing the audio input for a new audio track

Hi everybody,

a basis question:

When creating a new audio track (configuration: stereo), I can choose from the audio inputs. Here, I have two options:

1. selecting a hardware input (in addition to the single mono inputs, Cubase also displays stereo combinations of those as additional choices)

or

2. selecting a bus defined in the Audio Connections / Inputs tab page

Both works perfectly (I use a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4).

My question rather is:

What are the pros and cons of either option?

Which one do you use, and why?

Thanks in advance.

I think when you select a hardware input directly Cubase will create an Input Bus automatically.
So you should end up with the same result.

Yes, in some cases Cubase will automatically create a new input bus if you select your input via the hardware input option:
If this hardware input is already assigned to an input in audio connections (F4) Cubase will use the name that has been given to that input bus.
If this hardware input is not associated with an input in audio connections then Cubase will create a new input and name it after the hardware input itself.

One reason why you assign hardware inputs in advance under audio connections (F4) is that you can come up with meaningful names and that theses inputs will always be present in your mixer (no matter if you use them in your project or not). This way, you can create a dedicated setup.
