Is there a way to show which chord appears with a certain combination of notes played?

e.g. I want a Bm7(add11) to appear when I play the notes (B,D,E,F#,A). However, it always comes up with Bm11.

If I always want to see “m7add11” to appear for similar voicings (e.g. A,C,D,E,G), is there a way?

@DanielMuzMurray, I’m curious (and not at my computer to check): what does it show if you play B, D, E, F# (but no A)? (I’m wondering whether without the added 7th it shows “add4” (or even “add11”).)

To be honest, I can’t remember and I’m not at my computer to check what is displayed by default, but I prefer to use Bm(add11)… some use “add4”, some even just call it “m11”.

EDIT:
I checked: B,D,E,F# comes out as Bmadd11

(BTW, I was assuming you were using EDIT > NOTATIONS > CHORD SYMBOLS… > GENERATE….)

I played around a little in a default project, using both closed and open voicing. As suspected, when I enter the minor triad + 4th, it shows “add11”, but Bm11 is displayed as soon as the A is added in to the voicing. I suspect that the inclusion of the seventh automatically kicks the algorithm into what I’ll call “tertian upper extension mode.”

Poking around in Engraving Options to remind myself what’s available vis-à-vis your OP, @DanielMuzMurray. I’m now inclined to a feature-request for things like:

  • add4 (as opposed to “11,” which implies a seventh and ninth)
  • add2 (as opposed to “9”)

“sus4” and “sus2” are different, since they mean a chord with no third.

Would you be happy with “add4”? If not, maybe an additional feature could be to choose 2/9 and 4/11 in EO.

You should check the options on the Chord Symbols page of Library > Note Input Options, which is where the options Dorico provides for how voicings played on your MIDI keyboard are interpreted. I’ve not checked to see whether this specific voicing preference is covered there, but if it is, that’s where the options will be found.

That’s it, @dspreadbury! (This is not a feature of Dorico I ever use, so I didn’t even know about the “other stuff” under Note Input Options.)

@DanielMuzMurray, I can confirm that the Prefer add11 setting will give you want you want:

Thanks for the reply, Daniel. I didn’t know about this menu.

How can I input a
add #11” chord symbol please ?

Ok…it is possible, but it takes like 5 minutes to create and adjust…

A ‘create chord symbols’ feature would really be much appreciated. I saw a topic back from 2018 about that I guess…

Wouldn’t this do the job?

no, not for #11
