@DanielMuzMurray, I’m curious (and not at my computer to check): what does it show if you play B, D, E, F# (but no A)? (I’m wondering whether without the added 7th it shows “add4” (or even “add11”).)
To be honest, I can’t remember and I’m not at my computer to check what is displayed by default, but I prefer to use Bm(add11)… some use “add4”, some even just call it “m11”.
(BTW, I was assuming you were using EDIT > NOTATIONS > CHORD SYMBOLS… > GENERATE….)
I played around a little in a default project, using both closed and open voicing. As suspected, when I enter the minor triad + 4th, it shows “add11”, but Bm11 is displayed as soon as the A is added in to the voicing. I suspect that the inclusion of the seventh automatically kicks the algorithm into what I’ll call “tertian upper extension mode.”
Poking around in Engraving Options to remind myself what’s available vis-à-vis your OP, @DanielMuzMurray. I’m now inclined to a feature-request for things like:
add4 (as opposed to “11,” which implies a seventh and ninth)
add2 (as opposed to “9”)
“sus4” and “sus2” are different, since they mean a chord with no third.
Would you be happy with “add4”? If not, maybe an additional feature could be to choose 2/9 and 4/11 in EO.
You should check the options on the Chord Symbols page of Library > Note Input Options, which is where the options Dorico provides for how voicings played on your MIDI keyboard are interpreted. I’ve not checked to see whether this specific voicing preference is covered there, but if it is, that’s where the options will be found.
