Chord symbols above backgrounds

Hello,

I have a solo section in my score where there are notes for two bars (1st xo) and then slashes. I have the instruments set at show chord symbols over slashes, but they don’t show up over the notes. If I set it to show chords in all instruments, the chords from the rhythm parts show up in the whole parts.

Thanks.

Jon

Use a Chord Symbol Region over those notes.

Todd! Sure. How are you? I remember you from BMI. Are you pretty good with dorico now? I’m getting it and finally have stopped using Finale.

This worked. Thanks for your help!

Jon

I switched back in 2019 so have been at this a while. Shoot me a PM if you get stuck on anything!

Oh I will. Thanks Todd!

I need help Todd!

I’m copying this Beatles tune (see pic). They want the tabs, but you see when I drag the bass notes I get different numbers. I don’t know tabs very well.

With the guitar 2 part I can’t seem to get the tabs to show like the score.

Thoughts? Thank you soooo much!

Jon

Hi Jon! Sorry, I’ve never had a use for tab ever. That and guitar chord diagrams are about the only areas of the program I’ve never had any need to use. If you start a new thread with tab in the subject line, I’m sure someone else will chime in. Feel free to hit me up for literally anything else!

Could the command “Move to string above/below” be what you’re looking for? M moves the same note to a lower string, N to a higher. E on the second fret of the D string will thus become E on the seventh fret of the A string if you press M.

As for Guitar II, this is a rather unusual - albeit really smart - form of tab use, I have never come across anything like this yet. To me it is perfectly clear and intuitively readable though, I would surely use it if I had the need. But I’m not sure if Dorico can do this yet.

EDIT: For a start, you can hide the slash noteheads in the tab in Engrave mode, using the bottom panel and toggling “Hide notehead” at the end of the “Notes and Rests” category. Displaying the chord diagrams the way they are displayed in the original would require some tinkering with lines and custom symbols I presume, but I have never done this.

@klavierpunk nailed it. M and N after selecting the numbers in the TAB will solve your issue. And for Guitar II, use chord diagrams…

Thanks for your help guys! Clients do come up with tricky stuff sometimes.

Yep, and regarding the chord diagrams, you can tell them hat the original you copy from does it in such an unusual way, that even a sophisticated scorewriter like Dorico cannot replicate it in a reasonable amount of time. Standard chord diagrams are the way to go here.

Does Guitar II contain written out tab lines or riffs later on or is it strumming throughout?

Hi Todd,

I have this one part that gives me tacit al fine that I would like to get rid of and show the number of rests. How do I do that? When I turn off multi-measure rests, it does that for the whole part.

Thanks!

Jon

It’s Engraving Options>Rests…

Sorry Jon, just saw this but @Janus already provided the answer.
