Chord Symbols to create notes?

This would be very helpful for me. I am not as adept as those saying this would be a bad feature or “what is the point,” I am a student working through lots of harmony exercises and reharmonizations of lead sheets. I would love to quickly swap out a chord (without my midi controller) by inputting a new chord symbol and have that autofill the piano stave below the lead. Root position is fine, I can always change the inversions and actually I am being encouraged to play with the voice leading anyway. It is a lot more work to input all these notes manually and I don’t think having this feature takes away from Dorico or makes it less musically correct. Maybe one day I will be as superior and intelligent as those in the thread that think this feature is pointless, but until then this feature would be appreciated! (And honestly, it would help me learn too! Not everyone that uses Dorico is a super smart musician that doesn’t need any convenience or learning features, some of us are students!)

Hi, maybe it helps one or the other.
Just to learn music theory I have found a workaround that works for me.

  1. I write a melody
  2. I write the chord symbols over the melody, which i hope will fit
  3. Make a polyphonic piece out of it
  4. Export it to a midifile
  5. Import the chords from the midifile into a new instrument in the same score, so that they are shown to me as chord notes (root position)
  6. Compare the polyphonic score with the imported chord notes.

Hi All,

I’d like resurrect this old thread. I am a guitarist, and I have a penchant for jazz harmony. I can play chords that guitarists should not know how to play… :slight_smile: I am arranging some tunes for my band. I would like to be able to take my chord symbols and splay them out onto the staff - just as the voicings that Dorico chooses. I am not happy with some of the voicings Dorico chooses, but once they are on the staff, I will be able to drag the notes up and down to re-voice them as I see fit. I am not a keyboardist by any stretch on the imagination. So guitar in one hand; keyboard in the other… let’s transfer Bb13#11 from guitar to keyboard! As you might imagine, that is VERY tedious work! Is there a way (in 2024) to get the chord symbols transferred to a staff as skyscrapers?

Try Edit > Notations > Chord Symbols and Diagrams > Generate Notes from Chord Symbols in Selection.
