Clicks/stuttering on Mac Pro? What's causing this

Audio file example (recorded on an iPhone pointed at my studio monitors):

This is an Apogee Quartet set to 256 samples, 7ms latency. Mac Pro 8-core 2.66GHz, 16GB RAM. Kontakt is the only VST in use on this project, eating up 4.6GB or RAM only. As I start to bump up samples to 384, the problem diminishes noticeably. Here I thought my machine could handle this—guess not! And the Apogee Quartet manual recommends 128 samples, which was even worse!

So am I delusional that my system should be able to handle 128 or 256 samples smoothly?

Do you use Memory server in the Kontakt (Options > Memory)? Do you use 64-bit Cubase? Do you have last version of Apogee driver? Do you have last update of Cubase?

Yes, yes, yes, and yes.

Congratulation, it shlould works!

Can you try to switch to the built-in sound card? Just for the test. Does it work?
