Closing a file and Shutting down Dorico

For some reason the usual keyboard command to close a file on a Mac, Command -W is not working to close a Dorico file on my computer. It works as expected in other applications.

I also notice that when I shut down the computer, Dorico doesn’t close itself immediately and an Mac announcement comes up that this has stopped the shut down. This lasts only an instant, however, and then the computer shuts down.

Neither of these things is consequential, but I thought that. it might be of interest to the developers.

From experience, closing a Dorico file requires shift command W. Don’t know why this was chosen over the usual MAC command but I’m sure they had their reasons.

Yes, to close the Project, it’s Shift Command W.

Interestingly, if you look at Apple’s own Safari, you’ll see:

A Dorico project can have lots of windows and tabs, so it behaves in a similar way. You can Close the project when it has lots of windows and tabs open, and have them all open next time you open the project.

It’s also a ‘safety catch’, if you like: that the last window of the project must be closed in this way.

Curious. My Safari has always been just command W although shift command W works as well.

Thank you, lafin. I should have checked the file menu. There it is: Shift-command-W. Unique. Maybe Dorico not wanting to close when I shut down the computer is related.

It may depend on whether you’ve got Tabs configured somehow.

Like most ‘old school’ apps, Dorico will halt shutdown if there are unsaved changes. I think it should quit gracefully on shutdown if the document has been saved. (Word will do the same.)
It’s possible that if it’s taking a bit of time to quit, then the OS might flag a message.

My Safari is also Command-W. Never used Shift-command-W before for anything, but I see the point if Command-W is now being used for sub-commands.

Thanks, benwiggy. The shut down thing happens when all the Dorico windows are closed, so it must be that Dorico is taking more time to close than some applications.

No, guys, ⌘W in Safari closes the current tab. If you have only one tab, that closes the window too. ⌘⇧W closes the window with all tabs. In Dorico that is the same, and I like the safety of not being able to hit ⌘W so easily.

Safari, and some other multi-tab apps, is using cmd-W for closing tabs until there is no window with any tab left, then it will close this last window. Maybe you just don’t use tabs in safari?
In any case Dorico could maybe adopt the same behavior, in the other hand I think it’s a little “safer” to also having to press shift, to not accidentally close a project.

lol, we basically wrote the same comment at the same time. Cheers!

I use tabs in Safari, but had only one open when I checked the Safari FIle menu for the Shift-Command-W command and it wasn’t there. It only appears when you have more than one Tab showing, as benwiggy mentioned above. Never used that command to close all the tabs at once, I guess.

Haven’t yet investigated “tabs” in Dorico, and have no idea what they do, But I have only the full score open, and Command-W doesn’t close it.

If one hit Command-W by mistake, wouldn’t there be a warning to save?

Well, of course you’re free to change it to ⌘W or whatever you like.

Tabs in Dorico work very much like in browsers. But for piano music you wouldn’t have much use for them.
