Closing a "non-group track folder" hides channels from mixer

Matthias, thanks for the tip…but do I have to re-enable Sync to move tracks in the Mixer and then turn Sync back off to keep the tracks in the closed folder in the mixer? And if you’ve turned Folders into Busses, what are Busses now?

I’m coming from Nuendo 12 so the changes are new to me

Busses (Groups) stay busses (Groups). Folders can have Group-behaviour now, it´s an option:

Thanks wolfger! I don’t see the point but we all think differently

Yes, that is the only issue as being discussed in this thread.

It, “solves” the problem…

But there are some conundrums, it’s really not the best protocol/integration.

Conflict 1
For example, you have Group-Folder channels now - great - one of the benefits is users don’t have to open that folder to access a group channel instead to bring down volume.

Some people have a lot of folders and a lot of tracks in them, I have all sorts of PLEs developed to manage my folder visibility and open/closed state… But for so many years I have had both mixer Sync On and done folder management without worrying about this.

There’s certainly crossover needs where I want certain folders closed, but sync on.

Conflict 2.

There is no obvious visual indicator for the user to determine why some tracks they expected to see in the MixConsole aren’t there - whether the tracks are manually hidden, or if they a folder hidden. All of a sudden, ‘Show All Tracks’ doesn’t work, because a folder is closed.

It just makes things more confusing, especially for less experienced users.

The absence of folders having a GUI in the Mixer and showing up in the mixer as a narrow vertical no-audio-feature bar with an open/close arrow, and perhaps even Folder-Group channels should have their own stand-out GUI - and I suppose, this is the secondary problem if there is one - folder-group channels also disappear despite having the utility of being audio groups.

The Simple Issue I am having reading about this change in V15 is that in V14 and below, ‘Syncing visibility with mixconsole’ was just for that …Hidden or Unhidden tracks! Why would folded/unfolded folder tracks be included in this when they have nothing to do with track visibility?

Track visibility sync

I’ll add to my previous post to further paint a workflow picture for the devs,

There was never really a need for this in my workflow to have better sync-organization via Folder Open/Close state between the Project Window and MixConsole, because I have the preference/Project & MixConsole ‘Sync Selection in Project Window and MixConsole’ enabled (and on top of that, ‘Channel Selection Follows Event Selection’

and so there was really no need for this change in general although it could be fine as an preference/setting.

thanks

Why would a folder even show up in the Mixer to begin with??

Well, for some it’s probably a) the visual feedback that there exists a folder with something in it, indicated by the label we give it, and b) that in some instances it might be faster or easier to click a folder track to expand/contract the tracks listed in the mixer.

Also, in the first example above I’d count handing a project over to other engineers. Again, possibly easier to see that there is a separate set of tracks for “orchestral percussion” or “footsteps” or whatever compared to scanning the list to the left.

The same reason it appears on the project, decluttering and organizing. I don’t understand why you ask with two “??” when every other DAW shows folders on the mixer.

MattiasNYC, good point but I use tracks and groups, folders for decluttering

OFS, I’ve never seen folders in a mixer window and I’ve got Sonar, Samplitude, MixBus, etc. I was always told the Cubase and Nuendo follow real world audio setups…I looked all over my hardware mixer and there’s no folders…there’s inputs and outputs, channels and busses, inserts and sends… but no folders.

“but”? I don’t understand. I think my point still stands.

Pro Tools has had it for at least half a decade.

Right. And your hardware mixer has how many channels?

I´ve got Logic Pro and Studio One and both show Bus-Folder and VCA Folder in the mixer. (Logic Pro has it since 2013)
Comes in very handy organising big projects and decluttering the mixer.
Where is it written in stone that the only purpose of software is to reflect a hardware setup?
in countless videos people show how great it works in Cubendo to organise high track count projects in folders and shrink them down to a manageable view in the project window.
I think the exact same argument applies to the mixer.
This would be a 100 Track pop-project with VCA folders collapsed. Perfect to solo and Mute different instrument/vocal sections of a mix, and balance them against each other. Looks quite clean to me:

This would be the vocal VCA folder opened. contains 5 lead-vox tracks and 5 Backgroundvocal summing groups folders, easy to have an overview of all vocals and balance them:

This would be scrolling through the vocal tracks to finde the bus of the bridge vocals with all folders open/no folders:

Having folders is clearly faster, more organised for those use cases, don´t you think?
Maybe just give it a try and experience the benefits (or not  )

First of all I’m retired so I don’t need to beat the clock  I’m using my old analog 16 channel 4 buss mixer for audio but everything is done in the box. First time to the studio was early 80’s…2" tape on an Otari, etc.

In the track view it’s nice to group things in folders so you don’t have to scroll through a hundred tracks to find the one you want but I use Group Busses to tidy the mixer up…once the individual tracks are set in the mixer the group buss takes care or changes made to the group. I use Nuendo now for my own original music, I mix orchestral with rock with folk with…you get the picture

I can’t imagine having my Violins folder showing up as well as the Strings folder as well as the Orchestra folder, etc. I nest my folders…I decide how to group depending on the need…if the orchestral part is fairly simple I may just group everything to Brass, Strings, Woodwinds, Percussion groups or even a single Orchestra group. Drums get their own group buss but I use sends to 2 FX Busses, one a compressor I crush and one to a room verb I go wild on, then I mix to taste…

I can see where someone in a hurry would benefit from folders in the mixer but I prefer busses, one benefit is I can hide tracks in the mixer if they’re all set and I just need the group

At the end of the day no way is right or wrong, just how we prefer to work. For instance I’m a musician, I don’t use AI, loops, samples(other than sample in an instrument library  ) but a lot of people do, doesn’t mean I have to

That´s exactly what a group-folder is doing: buss tracks and hide them whith collapsing the folder

That could be my story and that sounds exactly like my workflow. Except that since the introduction of folders in Logic Pro I use folders to hide tracks in the mixer also once they are set.

To me it´s not an either or.

I absolutely agree on that.

But since you raised the question:
“Why would a folder even show up in the Mixer to begin with??”

Some people, me included, obviously felt the need to explain possible use cases.

I appreciate the replies, it’s always good to get a glimpse of how other people work…and by the way I haven’t used Logic since 5.5…I’m on Windows
