Nice. I like the rich sound on the acoustics. I did think the “8th’s” guitar sound was just a tad too brash and metalic sounding though. Vocal is good too, well-delivered and a nice character timbre to your voice. Bass is maybe a little understated? Nit-picky deatils I know, but otherwise a worthy interpretation - nice work, enjoyed.
Hi, thanks for your comments!
I thinks you’re right about the guitar being too metallic. It’s a 12-string guitar and kind of a challenge to blend with the other guitars. For the bass, I wanted it a bit lay back in the mix, maybe I pulled it too much.
I appreciate that you took the time, have a nice day
Hi,
I admire the love and effort you put into this cover!
Having said this, I am afraid your guitars are out of tune… Yellow requires a special guitar tuning and sometimes you even want to go beyond that and tune your guitars to a specific key instead of relying on the equal-tempered scale. This adds a very special quality which can’t be achieved otherwise.
Hi Reco,
I didn’t know about their particular tuning. It’s interesting to know but I didn’t find detailed information about that.
For what it’s worth, my initial goal was not to reproduce the song as is, but give an interpretation of it. Most of all, I wanted to challenge myself with the recording of 3 acoustic guitar parts and mix them the best I can. But I’m sure curious about this tuning and how it changes the sound!
Thanks for your comment
Challenge mastered
Just FYI because you were interested:
The guitar tuning I was talking about is basically the first string being tuned down to D sharp. Chris Martin uses this open string (D sharp) in almost all chords. This way different tensions are generated over different chords while all have the same sonic quality of this open string added to them. This sounds different than a workaround with the same tone being fretted.
Just try to play B (VII), slide it down to F# (II) and then E - all the time with the first two open strings.
Moreover, the whole song is tuned up or down a little bit - maybe the tape speed was altered, maybe it was the tuning - I just noticed it when I heard it. Awesome ear candy!
The fine tuning of the guitars is quite delicate, actually… It’s just a few cents off which adds this specific quality and if I remember it correctly it’s just one guitar (the solo guitar?). I haven’t heard the song for quite a while now so that’s just out of the top of my hat.
All three of these aspects add up which makes it really difficult to get it right tuning-wise. Although it all sounds so simple, natural and organic - more often than not there are quite a few tricks involved.
Anyhow - that was not your goal in the first place hence this is just a FYI as I said earlier
Wow, this is really interesting! I like those creative ways of giving a unique sound to something. Thanks for sharing!
