Collisions in MusicXML

I imported a MusicXML file and have some collisions in lyric syllables (wun-der) and accidentals (see A-flat in last bar).

I reset all layout and engraving options to default except for page/staff size, but they still persist. I also tried pasting the content into a new file. Can someone help identify the problem? I’m still fixing other things, so I will need to make the adjustment in the file myself, but I’ve attached it for reference.

As you can see, the system is overfull here.

You could decrease these in Engraving Options→Lyrics:

And perhaps use a condensed font. Here Minion Pro cond.

There are others on the forum who are better at lyrics-related stuff.

Thanks, resetting the casting off made it moot, but I was surprised that it was happening at all. I would have thought it would try to squish things first.

Well, when the system is more than 100% full, Dorico did in fact “squish things first”. Not in the way you might expect, but “squishing” means nothing else but “putting things closer together than one would want”.

Could you formulate what should have happened in your opinion? I see in the screenshot from @jesele that most of the lyrics are already quite close together; the only spot where there are no lyrics are the first two beats of the last bar, and there is also already some overlapping.

Thanks- that’s helpful to think about.

To my eye, the beginning of the system could condense a little more, but I certainly see how that’s very different in rhythmic proportion.

Here’s the whole system in that original file:

The Minimum GAP between lyric and hyphen actually only applies when there are two or more hyphens. It’s basically “how close can the first hyphen start”; and I’d suggest that small values can look odd, depending on the distance between hyphens and other factors.

However, the Minimum SPACE to allow for hyphen is essentially “how much space will there always be between a syllable and a hyphen”. The default is 1 space, I think; but I set it to 1/8. Most of the time you want to allow the hyphen to be close. (That doesn’t mean that it always will be.)
