Combine Selection Tools question

Hello! I noticed that when having Combine Selection Tools enabled, it’s intended behavior is that the bottom half uses one tool and the top half uses another.

This being said, is there a way to hold down a modifier and have the Object Selection tool override everything so that the Object Selection tool can be used in both the bottom and top half of the track without having to disable “Combine Selection Tools”?

Hi,

you can assign any key command to activate/deactivate Combine Selection Tool.
The default is Ctrl+Shift+1 (not Num 1 on the num pad). It is doable with one hand but you can also assign any other key to that command here:

Edit / Key Command / Tool

Got ya! So the only way to do it is to disable the Combine Selection Tool? There is no modifier for this?

Nope, see for yourself:

Edit / Preferences / Editing / Tool Modifiers

However, if you assign a key of your liking in key commands it will do exactly the same, no?

Oh, I’m sorry, you’re saying “Nope” there isn’t a way to set up a modifier?

No, that’s not possible to use Ctrl/Shift/Alt (or combinations of them) without engaging another key.
However, does it make much of a difference if you assign any other key to do exactly what Ctr/Shift/Alt would do?
Am I missing something?

Got ya! Thanks for the reply! I can use the default shortcut to turn off the Combine Selection Tool and it’s easy enough  I just figured if there was a way to use a modifier to use the arrow tool instead, it would require one less command so I thought I would ask. Toggle it on and off is easy enough though. Thanks for the reply!

No problem! Yes, it’s one more click to reactivate the Combined Selection Tool via key command, true. It never occured to me as a big issue but I rarely use it so YMMV…

If you’re willing to use 3rd party applications, you could use AutoHotKey (Windows only) to assign a single key to toggle something like the Combined Selection Tool by press/release.
I’m guessing Keyboard Maestro on Mac should be able to accomplish this task as well.
