Be aware that if you open the drum editor and establish a drum map for a track, look in the left pane, scroll a bit to the right, and you should find that you can remap each kit piece to any instrument/channel you like. GA can generate drum maps for you, then you can change things like the endpoint instrument/plugin and more.
This can come in handy should you ever need to stack instances of GA (or any other virtual instrument or MIDI output), yet work with them all from the same ‘track’.
Thank you for the reply! So, I’m holding down Ctrl, but it just opens a menu up. It doesn’t allow me to drag anything anywhere. If I hold control afterwards, it just puts whatever I drag on top of the other stuff and overwrites it. Am I missing something?
You can do it the way @Buer suggested or you can simply drag MIDI parts onto each other and glue them. The latter method is very simple and quick but doesn’t offer as much options as the refined Merge-method. For the things you described a simple copy/paste & glue would definetly do the trick.
What went wrong: You should have copied the MIDI parts and not the track themselves.
Two additional tips on top:
position your cursor/playhead at the start of your MIDI part. Now, you can copy the selected part (Ctrl/Cmd + C), select the new MIDI track and just paste the selected part via Ctrl/Cmd + V.
if you want to select all parts on a track double-click on the first one and all other parts to the right will be selected as well
EDIT: @Johnny_Moneto beat me by the minute… Thanks for taking the time to explain, Johnny
Ok, the solo the tracks and choose midi merge on your selection was quite simple, but this looks MEGA EASY and faster!
This being said, this is not working the same way in my Project. If I click and drag a part into the empty track holding option and then command to lock it in place, then do the same with the second track, it just replaces the first one I copied over. It’s not behaving like your video. Am I missing something?
Ahhhhhh. I do have that on. If you do this with audio, does that play both events at once? I think I turned it on for audio editing purposes. If that’s off, that’s how they are able to be combined?
If the parts are stacked it can be hard to glue them together?
I tried dropping them into lanes and glue would not work for me in that respect.
“Bounce MIDI” can be used to combine all parts on a track into one.
“Dissolve” can be used to separate a part into lanes based on options like Note Number (good for splitting each instrument of a drum kit), or MIDI Channel.
See in the OM about Track Lanes. The OM link I posted earlier in the thread might be pointing at audio lanes instead of midi/instrument lanes. Ooops, but it’s all in the manual.
Nope, it doesn’t work with audio events. You can select an event and click “U” to pick which one you want to hear. You can’t hear two overlapping audio events at the same time. It’s one or the other.
Got ya! So this is why it wasn’t working with click and drag, because I had Delete Overlaps on. I’m not sure If that’s something I want to leave off, so the other option with soling the parts I want and Midi Merging may be best. I’ll have to experiment with the Delete Overlaps stuff! Thanks for your help!
Thanks! I usually leave Delete Overlaps on, so I’ll have to work with it a little more with it off to see if I like the workflow with editing audio, or even midi for that matter. The best option may be the Midi Merge and soloing the tracks I want merged.
Think of it like this:
Project/Folders/Tracks/Parts-Lanes/
When working with MIDI or Instrument tracks things can go another level deeper into VST3 containers (I.E. for Note Expression events. Also, CCs can also be bound up into VST3 containers that ‘attach, move and scale’ with notes as opposed to simply floating on a CC lane. In short, a good example would be converting CC11 expression events to VST3 NE events…they glue to the notes then…so if you move the notes around, stretch them longer, quantize them, whatever…those CC11 events attached to the note will move/scale with them).
It’s just hierarchy.
To answer your questions about how lanes behave for audio events vs MIDI and Instrument tracks, etc…please check out the OM, and experiment as you go
Thank you! On a side note, how are you able to add videos to your comments? I took a screen video of my mac demonstrating this, but I couldn’t include it in my comment.
