Composition Chapters / Sections

[EN]

Hello,
I’d like to suggest a more fundamental improvement to the way a composition can be visually structured in Cubase.

When working on a medium or a long composition, especially for film scoring, games, cinematic music or narrative and orchestral compositions, it would be extremely useful to have a dedicated Composition Chapters / Sections system.

For example, a composition might be structured as:

INTRO → ACTION → INTERLUDE → REPEAT → ACTION → OUTRO

Instead of representing this structure only through markers, I think Cubase could provide dedicated visual sections that span vertically across the arrangement.

Example:
Each section could be represented as a clearly visible block:

INTRO | ACTION | INTERLUDE | REPEAT | ACTION | OUTRO

Each block could have:

A custom name
A custom description
A custom color
A custom or predefined image associated with the chapter
Clearly defined start and end points
A vertical visual boundary
A duration
The ability to move or resize the section
The ability to view the section in full screen
Easy navigation between sections
The ability (optional) to collapse or expand the section
Different visual colors for different section types and RGB/RGBA compatibility

The key point is that these sections represent the musical and narrative structure of the composition, rather than individual tracks.

For example:
Blue = Intro
Red = Action
Green = Interlude
Blue = Recap
Red = Action
Purple = Outro

This would allow you to immediately visualize the overall structure, even in a very large-scale project.

How would this be useful?

In a complex project, it’s often difficult to understand the overall composition by simply examining dozens or even hundreds of tracks.

A dedicated chapter/section system would provide a second level of structure in addition to the tracks:

Project → Composition Chapters → Tracks → Events

This would be particularly useful for:

Film scoring
Game music
TV/series scoring
Trailers
Long-form compositions
Orchestral compositions
Electronic music
Songs with complex structures
Sound design

It could also become a powerful navigation system. Clicking on “Action 2”, for example, could immediately bring the user to that entire part of the composition.

An even more advanced possibility

It would be interesting if these sections could eventually become structural objects, rather than just visual labels.

For example:
Duplicate an entire section
Move a section while preserving its internal content
Copy/paste a complete chapter
Reorder chapters
Create templates from chapters
Color-code sections automatically
Display section names in the timeline/ruler
Export or print the composition structure

This could essentially give Cubase a visual “storyboard” of the music.
I think this would be a very useful distinction:

Markers tell us where something happens.
Composition Chapters tell us what part of the composition we are in.

This would make large Cubase projects much easier to understand, navigate and manage, while also making the compositional structure visible at a glance.

Demande de nouvelle fonctionnalité : Chapitres / Sections de composition

Bonjour,

INTRO → ACTION → INTERLUDE → REPRISE → ACTION → OUTRO

INTRO | ACTION | INTERLUDE | REPRISE | ACTION | OUTRO

Chaque bloc pourrait comporter :

Bleu = Intro
Rouge = Action
Vert = Interlude
Bleu = Récapitulatif
Rouge = Action
Violet = Outro

How about using the Arranger Track? :slight_smile:

Thanks for your reply.
I think that’s a good point. I didn’t know that feature existed. It should help me improve the way I work in Cubase.
Thanks for the tip. I’ll give it a try. Thank you very much.

An additional tip: You can keep the arranger track always on top in your project window by dividing the track list.

Your feature request pretty much matches the description of an arranger track so you might as well mark @Cookie_Jarvis post as solution if you don’t mind.

I use a combination of Markers and Time Signature changes, see here:

Once you work out your time signatures, which are your first structural elements, notwithstanding anacruses, you can then proceed to include markers to define cycle points or else the beginnings of particular sections.

You could set more markers to define where a particular section actually starts, i.e., an anacrusis but I would instead use cycle markers for this purpose since they potentially offer a different structural element.

I have never used the arranger track due to my requirement of a linear workflow, with multiple anacrusis throughout so I find Steinberg DAWs, offer the most structured workflow for this purpose.
