Computer memory/processor

I have created a template for big band, strings, and vocals. I use Atomic Big Band, Groove Agent SE, Halion Sonic, and sometimes Garritan JBB. The template before composing is 41megs. There are delays processing my music entry, thinking it is either. My PC has 32 gig ram and a 2.90Ghz processor. Maybe add memory?

You mean there are delays entering notes, even in an empty project? I’m not sure your template would affect that much. Does the delay exist for a solo instrument project?

Windows? I would bring up your task manager, then performance tab to see whats up first - better than a blind guess.

Do you mean a ‘document’ (project) template, or a Playback Template? I’m assuming document.

41Mb seems very large; though Dorico does save the ‘state’ of every VST used within a document. (I don’t think that includes the sample, but just the configuration of the plug-in.)

It maybe that there’s some residual data in this template file. Maybe create a new one, and transfer everything over using the Library Manager? You’ll need to create a Playback Template to transfer the playback setup.

Which generation and manufacturer? Base or boost clock? There are considerable differences, more recent CPUs can sometimes overpower those from several years earlier by multitudes, even at the same clock and core/thread count.

yes a project template. Here is a screenshot of the task manager.

My VST app windows were opening when I opened the project. This took quite a bit of ram. When I close them they don’t take up ram and all the instruments play.

This still doesn’t tell us what specific CPU your machine is using. As it does seem, the RAM was indeed the problem, but my question was different.

As for the RAM: Are there any ways you can decrease the load, for example by lowering the sample rate in your VSTs? For the final render, you can still use the larger samples, but before that, it is often advisable to use smaller samples in order to ensure system responsiveness. At least I would try this before thinking about upgrading the RAM, as 32GB seem fairly reasonable for me.

thanks, I will take a look at the sample rate. I don’t think I will be swapping out my cpu anytime soon.
