Condensing 3 players, choices

Hi all,

I have a score with three horns. Sometimes Dorico decides to keep them one one staff, sometimes on two — and then they are always allocated 1+2 and 3.

(misleading image deleted)

Sometimes it is just fine to have that allocation, but sometimes I see that it would be better with 1 / 2+3 instead. Are there settings for this, or will Dorico always use the 1+2 / 3 allocation when using two staves?

Thanks!

The image just illustrates the 1+2 / 3 layout, which is the right choice for this passage. Other times it would be better with 1 / 2+3, but it seems that Dorico never makes that choice. Hence the question.

There is a setting for how many pitch crossings are allowed (if at all) in a certain section… Have a look at Notation options for your current flow and Layout options for your current layout.

Sorry for posting a misleading image, I updated the post to make my question clearer.

Here is an example illustrating what I mean.

Let’s say I have this music:

Dorico condenses it like this:

To my taste, it would be much clearer with player 2+3 on the lower staff, since they share rhythms. I could create two manual condensing changes, one for bar 8, putting player 2+3 in one voice, lower staff, and then one for bar 10, putting player 2+3 in one voice each, lower staff. Tedious. I could also create a custom condensing group for 2+3, but then Dorico will nevere put all three players on ONE staff again*. Like this:

Bar 8–10 are like I want them, but now I have to manually change the start to get my desired a 3.

So, is there anyway to influence the allocation of voices that Dorico chooses?

[*Edit: I found out now that Dorico will allocate 2+3 to lower staff if I put 1 one octave down. So it does sometimes select that solution]

Yes: manual condensing changes, as long as you don’t have custom condensing groups. Remember they need to start at the beginning of a system.
