Hello,
Still dealing with those pesky instrument labels in the condensation. I’ve been browsing the forum and it seems there are always issues with this.
Unlike a user who posted several months ago, I only want the labels and not the silences; however, regardless of the settings, both remain (labels and silences). This is very annoying, because, logically, it must be one or the other.
And, if we resign ourselves to rests, there is still no way to hide the labels other than through Properties, one by one…
Right, it’s late (00:20) and I’m going to bed.
So you basically want a third option - Show rests and labels?
I’m confused by your request to be honest. Perhaps a screenshot of what you have vs want might be useful.
It is also useful to not create a thread when you can post in another relevant one.

No I want only labels. But, despite the setting I requested (see screenshot in my post), Dorico continues to retain the rests as well.
Indeed. But, the thread I am referring to is very old, and I was embarrassed to bring it up again to explain my problem (which is the opposite of the one discussed in that old thread).
Player labels setting not working
Can you post an example where Dorico does not do what you want? It’s hard to diagnose a condensing issue without a project file to refer to.

Please find below an excerpt from the score in question. As you can see, although I requested only the labels, as per the settings shown in my original post, the rests remain.
Have a look at “Minimum lenght of range of rests…”
If it’s set to 2 (the default, I think), it won’t work for a 3/8 bar. Set it to maximum 1,5.

Thank you very much, Charles.
I’d just spotted the “enclouüre” before you posted, by comparing it with another of my scores. Indeed, this setting—in quarter notes—must not exceed the length of a bar for the removal of rests to work.
However, the default setting of two quarter notes can conflict with the time signature in the score. I’ve quickly noted this in the “memo” I’m compiling as I make progress in Dorico.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to point out that the default label placement causes them to appear systematically behind the bar line (when the instrument begin at a measure). I’ve changed the setting in the Engraving options because the default “-2” wasn’t correct to prevent this.
And, of course, there remains the wish shared by many people here to have a global command to hide all player labels when we choose to display only rests for inactive instruments. But, as Kipling said, that’s another story…
