I was going through my full score fixing and detailing all the condensing staves and found this (the first bar there has some weird unnecessary rests):
Then I went to Galley View in Write Mode to see if the Flute 1 (these are flutes) had anything weird in the first beat in that bar that would be causing the issue. Nothing:
Now, I know this is a bug that’s been around because I’ve encountered it in the past. My solution for years has been to export with the weird rests and then on the final PDF, but you have to remember that and keep a list of all the instances for every time you export —less than ideal, right?
So I was wondering two things: 1) does anyone have other workarounds?, and 2) does Daniel or anyone in the Dorico Team know if they’ll be fixed soon (like in the next upgrade or two)? That would be lovely!
If you want to keep the whole and half rests for the first flute on the condensed staff, add a manual condensing change at the beginning of the first measure shown which puts the first flute in an up-stem voice and the second flute in a down-stem voice. Then add another condensing change in the middle of the next measure which resets the manual condensing as shown in the first staff below.
If you want to hide the whole and half rests for the first flute on the condensed staff, add a condensing change at the beginning of the first measure shown which activates Hide rests for inactive players. Then add another condensing change in the middle of the next measure which resets the previous condensing change as shown in the second staff below:
Hi @johnkprice! Thanks for taking the time. I appreciate it. However, the point is that I’ve done precisely that. But my results are not what you have on your screenshots. That would be what I would expect. However, it won’t work as expected. It’s a known bug, I know, because I’ve spoken to Daniel about it in the past. Any workarounds (other than working it out on the PDF as I said on my OP)?
Rodrigo, if the screenshots of @johnkprice show a different result, there must be something he is doing differently from you (or you are doing something differently from him). It would be interesting to see, what exactly is the difference in procedure. It might be the exact placing of the condensing change.
If Dorico is left on its own (with a reset of condensing changes somewhere before this passage), then it shows my OP screenshot 1, which is clearly wrong: fl1 which should have a bar rest shows an eight-note rest, a quarter rest and a half-note rest.
Now, if I insert a Condensing Change right on the downbeat of that passage and force each flute to take a separate stem, then it does it right.
However, when I try to insert a Condensing Change to force both flutes to the same stem, then Dorico hides the slurs of fl2 completely — and this is something I can reproduce in other places as well, not just in this score, but in scores I’ve done before.
Condensing is very complex issue. I don’t exactly understand the mechanism with phrases and condensing changes. But I am glad that there are people who do know the way around it. So I am happy for any good suggestion and solution.
It seems that John pointed you to a solution for your issue/problem. So thank you very much for you bringing it up. That will also be helpful for
other users.
Yes, John was very helpful. The underlying problem remains, though, that if I want to render this passage with both flutes sharing a stem (therefore hiding rests, and using player numbers), I would lose the articulations. This passage right here works well with each flute taking its own stem, but others don’t. In short, half the issue has been resolved
