Conductor's subdivisions

I asked creating conductor’s subdivisions a month or more ago. The question was left unresolved. It’s possible I didn’t understand the answer. I know more now, am in a position to implement it, and almost have what I want, but there’s still a problem.

I asked about adding text that says (for instance) 3+2+2 above the score where there is a 7/8 meter change. I’d like these to appear only above the full score but also in the parts.

I’ve discovered System Text (Shift + Option + X) and the creation of default paragraph styles. I’ve created a style that displays in red and is in a rounded corner box. Very cool. Avoid Conflicts is on, so it doesn’t collide with high flute notes.

Alignment is my problem. These text boxes can be attached to bar lines because that’s where I’d like them to align. Technically, there doesn’t need to be a meter change at all, although that’s where I’ll use them.

I can’t figure out how to specify that the alignment point or attachment point (I’m unsure of the right vocabulary) should be the barline. (Or maybe the meter change if it’s the beginning of the system. I’ve already got measure numbers above the first measure of every system.)

Can someone kindly point out what I’m failing to figure out?

I don’t believe that the attachment point of staff or system text can be a barline – I think it has to be an item in the bar at a specific rhythmic position. If you select a barline and add text, the text is actually attached to the first note in the bar.

You can set up your paragraph style with a negative horizontal offset of something like -2.25 spaces, and that will position the text close to the barline (depends on your spacing gap settings and some other things). For measures where there’s a time signature change, an offset of something like -4.75 spaces seems to work, and you can set up a different paragraph style for that. If there’s also a new key signature…..well, at some point you’re going to be moving things in Engrave mode.

I’m not sure if there’s a better way of handling this.

I’m not aware of one either. I’ve used the same approach myself. Adjusting the horizontal offset of the paragraph style works pretty well. I created two paragraph styles with different offsets for different circumstances.

OK, yes, adjusting the horizontal offset seems to be working quite well! Sometimes I just need to know what to do.

I consider this problem fixed. Now I can go through and bang them all in.

One thing I have to be careful of, and maybe now is the time to do it — For the sake of being able to make copies on my printer that I can use to do red-line edits, I changed the format to letter size paper, but before I do anything too detailed in Engrave Mode, I need to switch it back to A4 because it will completely transform the layout. I’ve been looking for tasks I can do that aren’t affected by that, and I think I’m about ready to go back.

Thank you as always!
