Connecting 2 external synths to Cubase

Hi
Please can anyone assist in advising how to set up a new config I have in Cubase. I used to have just a Komplete Kontrol S61 connected via usb to my computer which was simple. I’ve now moved away from that and got myself a couple of hardware synths (Roland Juno X and SH4D). I struggling to work out the best way to connect. I haven’t yet got an audio interface or mixer as I haven’t needed one with the S61. Would I be right in thinking that the best solution would be to get an audio interface with 4 inputs so I can send the output pairs from both synths to these inputs. ? Then connect the audio interface via usb to computer.

Would I then create 2 separate audio input busses in cubase? It’s confusing me even more that each synth has 5 parts including the rhythm so how would I allocate the midi channels for each part ? I should also mention I am using only Cubase 13 elements so have to use audio and midi tracks only.

Any help would be really appreciated.
Thank you
Gary

Yes you need an interface with as many inputs as you need. These would enter Cubase just like any other external input. You have input channels and you choose these when you create an audio channel when you want to record the output of the synths. On your version I don’t think you can create actual instrument tracks like you can in pro but that’s not really a problem.
As far as midi goes you will need a midi interface for the older synths. You can get audio interfaces that have midi. Now if the synths can run many midi parts and you want to record on separate tracks then you need to assign separate midi channels to each part. If you don’t have enough outputs on the synth when you want to record the audio into Cubase then you can mute midi tracks and record one track at a time switching which one you mute until they are all audio.

Hi
Thank you so much for your quick reply…I thought as much regarding the audio interfaces. Regarding the midi side. Both the Juno X and SH4D have the usb to computer port. Could I just run the cable from these 2 into the computer to transmit the midi.
Thanks

Hi, I think that both units support usb audio in addition to usb midi. The Sh-4d can send up to 12 audio channels while I think that the Juno-x has one. This means that you could actually send their audio using usb, however, Cubase can only connect to one audio system as far as I know, so unfortunately you either have to use a setup as previously said by @mkok , or get into a virtual audio system which can get the audio signals from both devices. Unfortunately I have zero knowledge on this approach, but just wanted to let you know, and maybe an experienced user can offer a hint here.

Yes, you should have no problem doing this.

Great. Thanks so much. I think it’s best for me to get an audio interface and play around with the audio and midi channels from there. Can you recommend a decent but not too expensive audio interface where both instruments can connect to at the same time.
Thanks
