Constain horizontal not working for line tool

I’m using Cubase Pro 14.041 and would like to draw a horizontal line of midi notes governed by the quantise setting. I’ve seen folk do this on YouTube by starting to draw in the key editor with the line tool then press CTRL and the line snaps to horizontal. This doesn’t work for me - the line stays at an angle. It seems to be set up by default in the Key Comands. If i simply drag a midi note then CTRL can be used to contrain it to the horizontal. Is this a bug?

Appreciate any advice. I’m using a windows 11 PC cheers

Hi,

There is no Constraint Direction option for the Line Tool (actually, there is no Line Tool) in the Editing > Tool Modifiers.

thanks for looking into this Martin. Yes I saw there was no direct reference to the line tool in the just the drag and drop direction constraint which I presumed must cover it. i believe it was Demis Hellem used it in a vid. I wonder if this was added in cubase 15 as I just found in the only Steinberg cubase help for 15 -

Drawing Note Events with the Line Tool

In the note display, the Line tool allows you to draw a series of contiguous note events along different line shapes.

  • To create contiguous note events, click and drag in the note display.

  • To restrict movement to the horizontal direction, press Ctrl/Cmd and drag.

The notes have the same pitch.

If Snap is activated, the note events and the controller events are positioned and sized according to the Quantize and Length Quantize values.

That seems to be either a wrong manual or a bug in the program.
Ctrl/Cmd + Alt/Opt is not documented but lets you move the entire line to new pitch and position.

It’s all very odd. Maybe I should just ask how can I can quickly generate a horizontal set of identical midi notes based on the quantise settings.

By keeping the line horizontal yourself. Seriously, it is the fastest way.

thanks yes you’re right. We want things so easy these days! Using CTRL to Lock horiz or vertically when moving items is very handy. In accidentally drawing a diagonal line of notes it made me wonder if you could do a ramp of notes but have it only use notes in the key that is set at the left of the editor window.
