Continuous barline in score disappearing

Taking a chance that this is not something that just got fixed in 6.2 (which I see was just released.)

In my orchestral score I have flute 1 and flute 2 doubling on piccolo. I extended barlines so the flutes have continuous barlines. In Galley View it correctly looks like this:

And in Page View the first measures where I’m using Flute and Piccolo on the second chair also looks correct:

But 30 bars later, when the second flutist switches to flute, the continuous barline disappears in Page View (even though it is still continuous in Galley View):

Is this a bug? A setting I am missing? Do I need to make a bracket change everytime I switch between flute and piccolo as a workaround? Thanks!

What bracketing approach do you have chosen in Layout Options? You should in general find that flutes and piccolos share barlines anyway, because they’re part of the same family, assuming you’re using the Orchestral approach.

I do use the orchestral setting for brackets. But I reset my brackets on the Engrave page so the barlines break from flutes to oboes, etc. – when scoring, this makes it possible for me to better be aware of what line I’m working on it. I can better see where I am when it is 4 groups of 2 (in the woodwinds) as opposed to 1 group of 8.

I do similar barline breaks in the brass. In the strings I group the violins together and the celli and bass together (with shared barlines and sub-brackets as well.) This all contributes to greater readability on the fly to recognize what line you are working on without having to look to the left.

So what I’m really doing is sharing continuous barlines by the sub-bracket - this makes the score much easier to navigate. It might be helpful to have a setting to make barlines continuous within sub-brackets and braces (instead within the full brackets.)

I’m aware this is not standard notation - but if you haven’t noticed from all the noise I make, I’m not a standard kind of guy  But I’m loving your program as I continue to discover how well you thought it out.

Perhaps the wind band bracketing approach might be a more suitable default, since this does break barlines instrument by instrument? (I’m not sure whether flute and piccolo will be joined, to be fair.)

I can’t reproduce your issue.

How exactly did you make your barline change?

In the Engrave mode I selected the barlines between measure 1 & 2 and hit the connect barline button.

I should also specify that the second flute and the piccolo are two instruments on a single player.

It seems to work by just changing this option:

Concerto (1).dorico (2,0 Mo)

Ah, that did it. Thanks!

I assumed the primary bracket was the thicker bracket encasing the entire woodwind section. That is not the primary bracket?

Yes it is! But for some reason, this option must be enabled for your barline change to work properly…
