Control room won't work

Cubase Pro 14, Windows 11

Steinberg UR44 interface. KALI monitors plugged into Main Output. Iloud spkrs for a second set, though currently not plugged into interface (in the past they were plugged into Line Output Input 3/4 and could be used as a second pair.) So, sadly, I’ve disabled the control room in order to keep working on my music as I can only get audio using the stereo out connection.

To see what would happen, just now I disabled the main stereo out buss (which I always have done when working with control room) and enabled the control room and made sure the device ports were correct I see plenty of signal in the meters. Something is not letting the control room connect. Very frustrating. Any thoughts?

I know Control Room in Cubase and Nuendo are slightly different, but don’t you need an output as a source?

“Control Room won’t work” is a bit vague. Can you be a bit more specific?
This is how mine is set up (RME AIO - not the Pro version! Win 10, Cubase 14).

You spotted indeed a difference between Nuendo and Cubase.

So I disable my studio outputs, enable and go to my control room, and here’s (attached) is what I get. I see you have a MONOMON output. Is that what I’m missing? How did you get it?

Here is what I have available in my Cubase control room. No stereo out, as I see in your audio connections. Do you have monitor outs in your control room? If so, are you connected to them? As Johnny Moneto noted, it appears that Nuendo has the studio outs, but not Cubase. Am I wrong? What am I not seeing?

Can you post a screenshot of your actual control room, so we can see what´s going on there?

When enabled, I can’t get the control room to play the audio. I do see sound in the meters. When I disable CR and enable stereo out, sound works fine.

This may be very obvious, but in Control Room, is what is supposed to look like the speaker icon, enabled? You said disabling control room things work through Stereo Out. Enabling Control room it does not. And with meters I think they would show working.

This is what I always check first.

If you are still not sure, post a pic of Control Room set up, and both tabs.

Could you now check in the Main-Tab (which is closed now) if you didn´t turn down the volume by accident.

Next step would be to check the plugins in the inserts. I would try to bypass or remove them. it could easily be that one of those plugins isn’t passing sound.
It could be MCompare when a slot with no audiofile or missing audiofile is selected.
Happend to me once when using ADPTR Metric AB.

When I add a 3rd monitor, it routed it to the FX channels.

The UR44 only has two stereo, or four mono capability. You must change monitor 3 to a mono in order to use it properly.

Your routing seems ok (except what Wickham pointed out), did you check what I suggested in my last post? (Disable the inserts)

I think that’s down to the differences in the audio interfaces.

Perhaps, but this is the same interface (Steinberg UT44) I’ve been using for years, and it worked perfectly with the control room. Something now is not allowing the connection.

I am with @wolfger , it’s probably a plugin.

I put my money on that one:

Can you try to turn it off or check if it’s routed to “B”?

Yes, The culprit was, indeed, a plugin: Mcompare. I think one of you suggested it. And you were right!

Thanks to all for your help. It’s been driving me nuts. Now I just need to figure out how to deal with Mcompare. I bought it and I’m sure it’s a good reference plugin.

And now…back to working on my music!
