Controlling Instrument Numbering

I’m working on a large score with seven movements and each movement has four horns but the transpositions vary throughout. For example, Movement I has two horns in G and two horns in D. Movement II has two horns in E and two horns in A. I want to be able to adjust the staff labels so that in Movement I shows G1, G2, D3 & D4. In Movement II I want to show E1, E2, A3 & A4. Would appreciate help on this. Many thanks.

Since all players who share the same instrumentation (and are in the same “group”) receive successive numbering, the easiest way is to create copies of the E/A horns, so you effectively have 4 of them (in addition to “real 1/2” horns in G/D): but you just exclude the E/A horns 1/2 from all layouts, so they’re still in the flow and affect numbering (the remaining, visible E/A horns get 3/4) but otherwise are completely out of the way (the only place you see them is the player list in Setup mode).

I think you could achieve the same thing by manually renaming all the horn instruments every player horns, but this is just so much quicker and lets Dorico do its thing. (And naturally the player layouts can be renamed whatever, it doesn’t affect player names or staff names Dorico parses automatically; now I just left them to the verbose defaults.)
