Controlling Tempo for fine tuning

Sometimes I want to slow the tempo down (or speed up). It requires clicking the “*note-*75” numerous times before it will switch to the picture in the screenshot. For the life of me, I can’t figure this one out. It’s not something I do a lot, so I deal with it. Dorico is so good at almost everything I need that I know I must be doing something wrong. Any ideas? Thanks, Connie

If you want to use fixed tempo mode to play something back at a different tempo, you need to first click on the quarter note part of that button to enable that mode (the will change to a =), and then click the number part of the button to get the slider to appear.

Fixed tempo mode is really just meant for choosing an alternate tempo temporarily. If you want to set a tempo that will always be used, it’s better to input an actual metronome mark with the Tempo popover. If you don’t want the metronome mark to display, you can surround it with square brackets when you enter it (like [q=75]) or use the Properties panel to untick the “Metronome mark shown” property.

Ignore that slider! It is only really used for MIDI Recording or auditioning if, like me, your keyboard skills are limited!

You should control tempo adding Tempo marks using the shift-T popover (like shift-T q=72, shift-T Vivace or shift-T rall.).

You can also adjust tempo in Write mode using the Key Editor Tempo Track by drawing lines or moving control points…
